The Flyers
In the 2006-07 season, The Philadelphia Flyers had their worst season in their 40 year history. They finished dead last in the entire league, winning just 22 out of 82 games and only getting 56 points. They only won 10 games in their home building, The Wachovia Center, and only won 5 games against teams in their division. It was a terrible year that all of the Flyers and all of Philadelphia hope to forget about.
At the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Flyers team captain Keith Primeau and veteran defenseman Eric Desjardins both retired. This left some big shoes to fill for the Flyers. They tried by making Peter Forsberg the new captain and making Darien Hatcher their number one defenseman. Unfortunately injuries, lack of offense, and poor goaltending plagued the Flyers all season long. It got to the point where 90% of the team was rookies and there was basically no leadership or team chemistry. It seemed like the Flyers would be the worst team in the league for years to come.
Despite having a terrible year, the Flyers ended the season on some what of a high note. They aqcuired veteran goaltender Martin Biron and the young forward Scottie Upshall at the end of the year. Biron became the team's starting goaltender and they actually started winning games. The young Scottie Upshall became a scoring sensation and helped the team establish a team chemistry. So although they finished dead last in the league, they looked forward to next year with their new talent.
July 1, 2007 marked the first day of free agency in the NHL. The Flyers wasted no time at all making moves. They picked up veteran players such as Daniel Briere, Jason Smith, and Kimmo Timonen. All three players were captains on their old teams. Smith and Timonen will create a healthy and talented defense where as Briere will contribute greatly to the offense.
The Flyers already look like a team that can win the Stanley Cup. They have players like Simon Gagne, Mike Knuble, and Daniel Briere who can score a ton of goals. The new defensemen Smith and Timonen along with Darien Hatcher will provide leadership to the young defense the Flyers have. Last but not least, Martin Biron has great talent and will keep the Flyers in the game and not give up easy goals.
I personally can not wait until the 2007-08 season starts. I'm looking forward to see the Flyers make a comeback and get into the playoffs like the good old days. They're looking good and will not be an easy team to beat this year.
