Wasteful Ideal

Surprise is a doctor in unfortunate health
Who fixes you but cannot heal himself
He’s left his education with his car keys on his child’s shelf

But not the weariest of men use science as a crutch
Sleeping soundly and eating dirty babies for lunch
They dispose the remnants if you do not call their bluff

Now Jesus casts a look revealing his doubt
His fingers are crossed when he says he can help us out
But he spits green and there was nothing in his mouth
He claims the oceans will pound on him but clean us
For every tree that took the passenger seat when we stared at gold with lust
He’ll mend a century and wish us good luck

The other day I thought the pavement talked to me
For it pulled me down and refused to let me free
When really there was grass crushed in between
It said “There’ll be splinters tonight when you brush your teeth.
Come the winter, there’ll be no more wood to eat
And a trip to the dentist can’t save your dignity.”

I left quickly with a good bye and an ‘I’m so selfish’
But left my plastic plates on the picnic table regardless
And pretended I could do nothing to change it
