Green Day, 17th of December 2005

Its nearly been two whole years since I saw Green Day on their American Idiot tour, in fact, I saw their last American Idiot show. “You guys are in for a real treat tonight!” from the mouth of Billie Joe Armstrong, oh, and he was right.

I woke up early that morning, and the first thing that struck me was “Oh my God, im going to see Green Day today!”. I got up from bed, and tried to kill time.

Finally, after begging my mum, she got in her car, and we picked up my friend, and drove of to the city. We were dropped off at the Telstra Dome (an arena in Melbourne) where we were met with other Green Day fans.

I never knew anything bout the scene, I never knew anything about stereotypes back then, I was a pretty naïve 14 year old. I wore a green Roxy t-shirt, which to this day I laugh at for wearing to a Green Day concert, but luckily, I bought my very own Green Day t-shirt.

We lined up at 3pm, the doors opened at 6. We waited and waited, it took forever, and we made a couple of friends in line. Finally, after many ”Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi’”chants, the doors opened, and after everyone in the line finished cheering, we were finally let in.

I got tickets for the back mosh (I would have gotten front mosh tickets, but due to my naivety of concerts and what not, I wasn’t smart enough to do much about it), and as soon as I was let into the arena, I ran as fast as I could. Which led me to the front of the back mosh where I could see everything.

Green Day had booked My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World to be their support acts. We waited half an hour, and at 6:45, My Chemical Romance came on and started playing Helena.

I was fortunate enough to get into MCR back then because I got to see their Revenge songs performed, nower days they rarely play most of their songs from Revenge.

MCR also got us to sing happy birthday to their manager, and 370000 people singing happy birthday, well, it was funny.

After MCR left the stage, Jimmy Eat World came on. I have to admit, I didn’t really like Jimmy Eat World. Although at the end they smashed one of their guitars and threw it into the crowd. Then they left.

The crowd pushed and shoved to get to the front for the next act. We had waited 30 minutes after Jimmy Eat World had left and it was anytime soon that Green Day was to start. Although, some of us knew what else was in store before Green Day. The pink bunny came on stage, and used the Australian flag as a cape, he had a bottle of VB in one had, and danced around.

He got everyone (370000 of us) to do the Mexican wave and the YMCA (which was hilarious watching everyone up in the seat do). The pink bunny got us pumped up for what was about to come on next. We were so excited!

The roof opened up, and we could see the night sky, and then that music came on, the one with the trumpets and toms.

Green Day just appeared out of nowhere, bowed, and ripped into American Idiot. That was the first time I remember being in a mosh pit. I got thrown around, and I loved it.

“Ok, this next song, it isn’t a song that you dance to”, they then played Jesus of Suburbia. It was great. I don’t remember all of the songs that they played, there were so many, they were on for more than two hours.

They played ‘Wake me up When September Ends’, and when Billie Joe sang, “Here comes the rain again, falling from the stars”, it started falling with rain. The roof was open and rain started falling, and then it stopped. I found that to be a special moment.

During that song, they had cannons filled with confetti, and it wasn’t just ordinary confetti, it was Green Day confetti! Talk about merchandise! They blasted confetti all over the dome, it was great. I took a heap of it and stashed it in my pocket. I still have it to this day.

Green Day even played ‘Homecoming’. You wanna know why I loved this? because Trè Cool sings in it!!!. And Trè did a wonderful job at it too. It was great, seriously man, Tre got such an applause and roar from the crowd!

I remember when they were introducing Tre Cool, he jumped out of his seat, and ran down the isle chopping out chunks of his hair with scizzors! And then he threw bits of his hair out into the crowd!

During ‘King For a Day’, they had people playing with puppets behind the amps, and there was a puppet of Dumbledore. And the guys playing the trumpet, well, one of them was wearing a bee suit!

There were big blasts coming out from cannons, fire roaring out from cannons too. There were very large screens put up so people way at the back could see everything too. Just like what you’d imagine on Bullet in a Bible.

Although, we were in for a real treat. Billie Joe started talking about when they came here (Australia) for their Insomniac tour, he said that they toured with a very talented band. He was, of course, talking about The Living End. “We’ve got a special guest for you guys tonight, he’s going to help us out with this song”

Seconds later, a man with red hair walked out on stage, everyone knew who he was. He was Chris Cheney. Everyone cheered him on and yelled out “Chris Cheney! WOOOO”. It was madness!

Chris Cheney walked out with his guitar (Gretsch White Falcon) and started playing ‘I Fought the Law’. It was incredible because he was there, playing with Green Day. (for those of you who don’t know, The Living End are from Melbourne). Chris Cheney and Green Day performed brilliant!

Green Day came back for two encores, which was great because they had these signs put up that made us chant “Green…. Day”.

The last encore I still remember, Billie Joe performed ‘Good Riddance’ by himself. I remember it, and I knew that this was the end of it, I knew that I should hold onto that moment in my mind because it would all be over soon.

And, it was. He finished. Mike and Trè ran back up on stage. Fireworks were set off, and we could see them due to the fact that the roof was open. Everyone clapped and cheered them on.

Billie, Mike and Trè then took a bow, more confetti blasted out of the cannons, and that was the last time I saw them. *sheads a tear*

I got home that night, and I lay in bed, ears ringing so bad, and I thought to myself “wow, I just saw Green Day. Today was definitely one of the best days of my life”. And I swear, it still is.
