The Current State of Music
Oh yes. The ever growing debate of the current state of music. To some, the current music is amazing. To others, it's horrible.
Now, I like to link music nowadays to music in the 80s/early 90s. Think, what was happening in the 80s? Hair metal. Metal bands like Poison and Bon Jovi seemed to bring in as many hormonal teenage/early 20s girls. But now, think about this. What is happening to most bands nowadays? Well, most 'pop-punk' bands? Guys are sporting more make-up and more hair products then most of the hormone-driven girls that dream of them. Don't get me wrong, I love guyliner as much as the next person, but I do have my limits.
Now, there's always the old saying for people who hate rap music. "Rap is crap", or they say that rap stands for "Retards Attempting Poetry." Personally, some rap I can deal with and I like. It's mainly rap songs that demean women that I can't stand. We've all seen the video of the rapper with a glass of champagne with 3 or 4 skantally-clad women dressed in a bra and tight as hell booty shorts. It's these songs and videos I cannot stand. However, songs like Ludacriss's Runaway Love I have no problem listening to. You know why? Because it's giving a message. And in the current state of America, we could really use them.
This brings me to rock. I mean all kinds, but I think I'm going to specifiy 'pop-punk' bands because that's what seems to be most popular. Bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, and We The Kings. Now, I'm not bashing ANY of these bands because I don't want to offend some people. All I'm going to say is, take a listen to a Bad Religion or a Descendents song. Then listen to a Fall Out Boy song, or a band like them. They sound NOTHING alike, right? It also seems like most songs coming out of these bands are about girlfriends or partying etc. Don't get me wrong, I love party songs, but hearing it over and over and over and over again, it tends to get monotoned and quite frankly boring. Again, I'm not bashing ANY specific bands or types of music, I'm just singling out what I think are the most popular things going on now.
To end this blog, I'm going to quote Green Day's own Mike Dirnt.
"Alot of these bands have the potential to do something and take a stand for it, but they're not, for whatever reason."

I can't stand most rap. But rappers like Kanye West and the Beastie Boys I just.. get. I don't know why.
Good blog, btw!

I hate when people generalize "today's music" or the "current state of music" like that. Ugh. You would be utterly shocked to discover how many genres -- yes, full-blown genres -- you don't know about. Go discover them. Believe it or not, there's bands with ACTUAL TALENT out there!
Rock music is not just metal, hardcore, and pop-punk. There's about a million other genres in between. Mainstream music has always sucked. It sounds the same, because that's... what it is. It's generic music made to sell.
The "current state" of music is not declining. You're just skimming the surface.

Humdrum lyrics really kills music complexion. Fall out boy boldly entered the zone of covers with 'Beat It' and it was trashy, and forgetful. To me Music has became a luidicrous straight up selling point. Paramore are good for catchy ultra-layered melodramatics, but lyrically generic. I think talent is hard to spot or pinpoint these days, and bands like the above are living on borrowed time.

I AGREE WITH THIS BLOG

I sort of agree with this blog. I mean, music today just plain sucks for the most part. But hey, some of it is actually amazing. And the thing about Fall Out Boy, most of their songs are about Pete's depression and stuff...they aren't about partying really=\ but I guess it's kinda hard to tell unless you're a fan.
Sometimes I get kind of upset with some of the music I like, but I like it for the beat when it comes to rap or pop. Some of the messages are really terrible, but I learn to block it out because I know it's bad. Same with all the indie bands on myspace. They all look and sound the same. It's quite annoying, but I like some of them.
I honestly don't think anything I just typed makes sense, so I will just shut up nowxD

I agree with you on pretty much all of this. Rap really has turned to crap lately along with hip-hop, because all of it sounds exactly the same, and have lyrics that just make me want to puke, not to mention lack of musical talent (or music at all).
Pop just kinda blends in. Half the time I can't tell who sings it because they sound the same. Now some of it I can handle, because it's not all that bad. It's just the overplaying and popularity that makes it a turn-off.
Anyway, good Blog.

This is how I see it.
EVERYTHING sounds the same.
Rap is the same.
Pop punk is the same.
Punk sounds the same.
everything sounds the bloody same.
It's meant to, Hence why people listen to certain genres.
I love how it's going now, Sucks that im the only person whos appreciating it.

The problem is everyone sounds the same. It's all the same, tight (looks painted on) pants, you know, skinny boys with guitars. Their voices all sound the same.
The way I see it, if you look good and have some talent, you'll make it in the music buisness.
The problem also is, there is nobody like the huge bands anymore. I haven't even bothered to take my time to download any of that mainstream stuff, becuase I know it's all the same.
We need more bands like Aerosmith, and Green Day where the bands have people who actually know what music is about and have worked to gain talent in music. But nobody has that anymore.

The thing I dislike about music today is the stemming off from the original greats, you know?
Like what you said, the only kind of rap I'll listen to, is old school or stuff like Linkin Park, the kind that doesn't talk just of money, drugs, and degrading women.
I basically don't like any bands or music group formed after 1999. Anything after that in my opinion, is just a knock off of something great.
I love guyliner, but enough is enough man.
I agree with you an pretty much everything in this.
Great Blog
:D
