Amazing

As you know from a previous blog, I got a solo in chorus. I was the only girl to get a three-and-a-half-minute solo. I sang, "My Immortal" by Evanescence.

Yesterday was the day I had to sing it. Our first concert was from 1:20 to 2:20 for my entire grade. My aunt showed up too.

First there were the two select groups. Then, it was my turn. I got up on the stage, my heart jumping out of my throat and my legs shaking like never before. I knew I shouldn't be nervous, because I had heard everyone in chorus either come up and tell me I did pretty well or tell people that I was good. But I was worried. Years and years of "You suck!" can do that to a person. I didn't want a repeat of the bullying I'd endured over the years.

As I got on, there were people who don't like me, coughing obnoxiously. You could tell it was fake, too. As the music started, everyone completely stopped all movement. I couldn't hear one cough, yawn, sneeze, whisper, comment... anything. Complete and utter silence. My aunt was crying in the back row. Everyone's mouths were hanging open, some were moving, but no sound was coming out. At the beginning, I was shaking like mad. You could see it, too. But then I realized, They aren't laughing! And my heart calmed, I shook less, and I was louder than all the other soloists, louder than the entire chorus that went after me! The acoustics in the auditorium were amazing, and it just made me louder.

And then, when I had poured my heart and soul into the performance, there was another second of awed silence, and finally, I got applause. A full four or five seconds more than everyone else, says my friend who counted. I stood there awkwardly, and then walked backstage. It's not my fault I had no idea what to do, we hadn't rehearsed that part!

Then, I had to do it again a few hours later. My cousin came and everyone in chorus (besides me and my friends) were asking me questions about him. They were infatuated with him! And at the end, he said he had to go. And I said, "Okay, Joshy, bye. And just remember: If you get attacked by crazy chorus girls-" But I didn't get to finish my sentence, because he got a funny look on his face and ran like the Dickens. (we have a similar sense of humor)

Everyone is still talking about it. No one knew that I could sing, no one knew that I could sing well either. And boy, did the kids on the bus feel like a horse's ass! All those years of saying I can't sing and telling me to kill myself, and they hear that... life is sweet. Smile

Today, we went to Gettysburg. It was a long trip and I had to be at school at 5:45 AM. On the way back, we watched Daredevil. And on the movie they played an excerpt of - guess what? - My Immortal. On the permission slip, in big bold letters, it said, "No singing on the bus!" And when the song came on, the teacher who wrote the rule paused it and everyone on the bus (including her) forced me to sing it. They turned it waaaay down so they could only hear me, and once again, everyone was silent.

My mom got all these comments, I was asked a MILLION times if I took voice lessons (I did not), and people were asking me the same questions, telling me the same "You're really good!" and all that, and they keep saying that our band is gonna make it or something like that... I've been called the "celebrity" of my school, because everyone's annoying. But it's not so bad. I just don't like people to be in close proximity to me or ask me personal questions.

For the rest of the ride, I was a jukebox. "Skylar, do you know Taylor Swift?" "Skylar, can you sing ___?" "Sing in Russian!" "Sing in Japanese!" "Sing the Barbie Girl song!" "Sing it in German!" And I had to remind them on multiple occasions that I have the right to not sing their shit, and that I have the right to my dignity, and if they keep asking me to sing Taylor Swift or Hannah Montana or whatever, I have the right to sue for harassment.

I also tricked everyone in Subway into thinking I was French with my amazing French accent, before Michelle blew it. Boy, were the employees pissed! "What?! You could speak perfect English the WHOLE TIME?!" lmfao

But that's another story.
