Cutting has become a trend now. And I hate it.

I know kids who are really bright, nd they tell me they cut themselves.

What the fuck? If you don't have a crappy life, don't fucking complain. There's somebody out there who's life is way worse.

Just_Jack:
cutters are pathetic

Thats an awfully narrow minded statement to make

However, i'm sure you are smart enough to back up your argument.

To be honest, I don't see the appeal in cutting either, i've been through enough physical pain in my life not to inflict any more on myself. I know many people who cut for attention, but many also genuinely do it because they are depressed or whatever.

I kinda think now after some argument going on here that the one who originally said "Cutters are pathetic" is either seeking attention (because a statement like that is gonna attract a lot of replies) or is just way too closed-minded to understand that people are different and there's nothing laughable about mental disorders
.

So..
ExtraodinaryGirl:
Would you go up to a Special Ed. stupid at your school and tell them they're pathetic? If you would, well, I'll have to pray that in future generations, people like you won't exist.

I'm guessing you haven't ever seriously considered suicide or self-harm?

When you have the disorder(usually- actually, I think it's always- depression)that isn't what goes through your mind. If YOU are miserable with your life, if YOU have people making your life miserable, if YOU have a chemical imbalance in your brain that makes you not want to live, that's what you know.

People who don't suffer from too serious depression(or any depression)can see that, but there are lots of people who see what the feel. You know?

I use to cut myself for a while...and when my parents took me to threapy I was diagnosed with the depressed disorder. I was told it wasn't that serious.

that statement seems like it is implying that bright people have less of an excuse to self harm... it is possible to be smart and miserable at the same time you know.
and there will ALWAYS be someone whos life is worse.

you're right, but I think she meant that she's confused how someone bright could be so stupid to hurt themselves that way, when in reality they're really quite blessed in comparison to kids amidst starvation, disease and poverty, and they can't see that

No, not really. You can't tell who's life is worse..Someone who's rich and is living their dream might be more miserable than someone who's cold and starving. It's not about the material state of your life, it's about how you feel. Everyone has their own hell. Someone might dream of a life that someone else is willing to give up. You really can't tell who's unhappier.

hmmm... that is true. i never thought of it that way. thanks.

but... then again when people look in on others lives and they may see someone who should, in theory, be happy. like if they're rich and living their dream like you said, but, in reality are completely miserable and self harm. and then see someone else who is living on the street but may be perfectly happy. and then they come up to the rich kid and go "why the fuck do you do that to yourself? theres nothing wrong with your life, you have it way better off that that kid" *points to street kid* but really.. really its not. its their state of mind which makes then so sad and miserable. its pessimists versus optimists.

sorry for the little story it made it easier to explain.

Oh, sorry if that offended you(although I don't see how it would, lol, but if I wrote it wrong or you read it wrong or whatever, lol), just nobody who has ever felt that low has ever made a comment like that to me or to anyone. It tends to be people who don't understand that... well... don't understand, lol.

I've never been that low in any stage of my life, so I've never felt the need to cut myself and hence I don't understand why people do it, so I guess I might not really see the big picture when I say I think it's stupid. But it doesn't make sense anyway, physically harming yourself doesn't make anything better. That's just the way I see it.
And as for not comparing our lives to those of the less fortunate... I like to be grateful for what I have rather than bitch and moan. I'm not saying that that's what cutters do, but sometimes when you look at other people, it's a reminder of what's great in your life that others are lacking. Just a thought.

It's weird though. It's hard to stop it once you start, and you get into a state of mind [well, I did] where every little thing can amount up to something big and make everything seem worse. And then you see people with awful lives and hate yourself for getting so worked up over something so petty and then that adds up too... it was a really vicious circle and it's really hard to get out of

Yeah, stories always make it easier.
You know, I just kinda think, it's not even optimism or pessimism. It's just that we have different needs. I knew these 2 people:
One man was always broke, could barely provide for his family, his kid was fucking up at school all the time, work sucked - but he was admitting that no matter how weird that is, he's happy. Maybe because he had a loving family and that's exactly what he needed.
And this woman had a rich husband that loved her, she could pretty much do whatever she wanted and had this perfect life, but she was absolutely miserable. Maybe because she felt like she was living in a perfect picture in someone else's album, and that's just not what she wanted.
Someone's dream is someone else's nightmare

yeah. nhow wouldnt the world just be so much better if we all had the same needs/nightmares? THEN, we could fairly compare whether we have the right to be more or less miserable than another.

Someone's dream is someone else's nightmare
.
yeah. nhow wouldnt the world just be so much better if we all had the same needs/nightmares? THEN, we could fairly compare whether we have the right to be more or less miserable than another.

LoL...Well, then we would still be in like Stone Age 'cuz if everyone was the same there would be no genius people, no creativity, no discoveries, no evolution...no love
yes but... if it had always been that way.... we wouldnt know any better. so the world would be so much more peaceful.
