And I've got scars to prove I was cutting myself. And my friend did as well but now she's stopped.
Why do you need to prove it?
EXACTLY...
....nothing to be PROUD of

Friends from my school are cutting their arms for fun. I understand if you cut a sign or 'tattoo' in your arm, but if you cut yourself with a razorblade just to be 'cool'? No way. That's stupid.

Yeah, people at my school do 'Chicken Scratches'.
It's just stupid

Yes, and that's childishly too.

I was watching Oprah, and this girl was on who used to cut herself every day. It was sick and disgusting and painful, why would anyone do it? Luckily, Oprah got her to stop.
Oprah didn't make her stop. No way.
Now i'll tell you why they do it. Listen well, i've explained this well over ten times on here now.
So you fell off your bike and broke your arm. So you stepped on some glass and cut youself. Slap a band aid on it, put it in a cast, it'll heal, right?. Physical pain is easy to deal with.
So your best friends died in a car crash. So you've been diagnosed with a MD that makes you think, feel, act, compells you in a way you can't control or can't understand. You're unstable. One day you're on top of the world, one day you're in the metaphorical gutter with no idea why. That is fucking terrifying. No band aid or cast can heal mental pain.
The next easiest way to cope is by hurting yourself physically, one common form of self harm is cutting. You're replacing this mental torture with physical pain, a pain you can deal with.

Only you're not replacing pain, your avoiding it by harming yourself and its a terrible habbit.

Yeah, I scratched my name into my arm the other day with a pair of scissiors in physics. Not really for the cool factor as in thinking other people might be all ZOMG SHE'S SO COOL SHE LIKE CUTS OMG, but yeah...I thought I'd just see what it looked like, plus I was mighty bored. It looked quite good once it wasn't red anymore. It's gone now though, I didnt do it hard.

In reality.
There is no difference from teenager cutting to seem cool than going out to get a tattoo done. High school is a mini world and their are different interpretations of status.
I have never cut but i have multiple tattoo's, they all serve as reminders to different parts of my life, to an extent i can believe that self harm can be expressions of a persons life style, also to a point if I say self mutilation is completely and utterly disrespectful to a persons body then I would be a hypocrite.

Interesting point...
On that note, I've read articles or seen tv shows about cultures (I think in parts of africa) where they have very different views of beauty; some of the stuff they did to enhance their looks could probably be considered self harm by the western world.
Scarification is another. So cutting your wrists with a razor isn't good, but having something branded into youself willingly is okay, seemingly. Either way you still end up with a scar at the end.

Yeah, that is a really dumb idea. Pushing off pain by causing more? All of it will come back in the end. It doesn't seem right at all. And my opinion is not going to change at all.

All you end up with is a bunch of scars that don't go away and a constant reminder of what was wrong in the first place.

people do it because its a way they can use to punish other people who didnt agree with them or even wont get them what they want, its an emotional trap with most of them.

Especially parents, it makes them feel as if they have one up on them, "Look mom, you can't stop me from doing this can you?" ALmost a way to get even. However, I think there is usually more to it than just that, they had to have a reason to want to get back at each other in the first place.

I dont either, its a lesser form of suicide in my opinion and those people need help. If they are depressed enough to where self harm seems more bearable then dealing with their life, they need some guidance.

Quite often it can be a case of people can feel like they've lost control of their lives, and self-harming is one thing that they can control (eating disorders are often the same situation too).
My brother and I got into an argument about this one time: Is commiting suicide selfish? At first i thought it wasn't but what he said kind of made sense, you really are only thinking about yourself, not the people around you.
by the way the book 'Cut' by Patricia McCormick is wicked good, it's about a girl whos in rehab for cutting. I was always afraid of sharp knives and the thought of cutting terrifyed me so i read this, it helps you see the other sides point of view, plus its short, only about 151pgs
