What's in a name?:
First of all, self-harm doesn’t equal cutting.
Some who self-harm (read: fake cutters) “only” wants attention.
Others who self-harm are masochists. Those who hurt themselves as a
punishment may (but not necessarily) have some sort of disorder/mental illness.
Same thing goes for the ones who feel numb/empty. It can be a result of depression
(as an illness, not a mood swing). Self-harm can even be a fascination.
Also physical pain is much easier to deal with than psychological.
Those who commit suicide are often mentally ill (ex. depressed).
It’s people who have given up and since hope is the last thing that leaves
a human it’s understandable that they kill themselves. Those who do kill
themselves can also be trapped in a situation from which they see no other
escape. The ones who try to commit suicide but “fails” didn’t want to die
to begin with in a lot of cases. It’s “just” a last desperate cry for help.
NOTE: I’ve never tried to kill myself and I have never wanted to, so of course I can’t know what it feels like to be in that situation.
Self-harm, such as cutting, used in order to feel better in some way never
helps in the long run. I wouldn’t say that self-harm is wrong because in
some cases it’s understandable, and to define wrong isn’t the easiest thing. It’s not productive however and doesn’t result in a positive change.
When people do it to gain attention it’s even more stupid (read: it’s a stupid
thing to do). If you want attention do something productive. I know it’s not
easy but most things are better then hurting yourself to make people notice you.
My view on suicide is very complex but I’ll try to keep it simple.
In some cases it’s completely understandable. Since it’s your life it’s your
choice, but it’s horrible to make a decision which really, really hurts the
people who do care. Also there will be many unanswered questions and the
once who cared will automatically place the blame on themselves.
I won’t state that it’s right or wrong because I don’t think that I’m in such
a position where I can judge fairly. I’m not sure if anyone has the right to
say that it is either this or that.

People who do(and actually do hurt themselves) it to get attention are not stupid, and it is extremely judgmental to say that. If you were so alone, so desperate and begging to jsut be noticed, that you would go as far as to cause youself harm so that someone knows you exist, I would not call them stupid, and anyone who does is hearltess.
Maybe they have been doing "productive" things their whole lives, but no one else sees it that way. Maybe their idea of productive is art or music, and they were raised in a family were being porductive means excellent grades and being a lawyer when you grow up.
Don't act like it is so black and white, it is anything but.
Failed suicides are not always the result of those who didnt really want to die, and it wasnt always for attention. Someone may have stopped them or saved them. They may not have taken enough pills or maybe they intended to bleed to death and they only passed out or something, that doesnt mean they were desperate and trying to get attention, it means they are depressed and need help.

I said that it’s a stupid thing to do and not that the persons doing it are stupid. It’s a difference. You misunderstood my post.
All I was saying was that it doesn’t actually help. It doesn’t contribute to that person’s life.
That’s exactly what I meant but maybe I just couldn’t express it the right way. I never meant that they were attention seekers but that they are trying to get someone to notice how horrible they feel. You’re right that someone could have stopped them etc. I forgot to point that out.
It isn't that I misunderstood your post, it wasn't written in the best way. Now that we have that cleared up, I agree with you.

Ok because it really seemed like you did misunderstand it. And you must have (at least a little) because I didn’t in any way say that people who self-harm are stupid.
I tried to explain myself the best I could and I think I did rather well. You have to bear in mind that English isn't my native language which makes it more difficult than it already is. I’m glad you agree and I’m very glad that we cleared things up. So it’s all good. And thanks for your additions, they were needed and appreciated.
umm.... people who do it are kind of selfish, because they should think of their families and people who do actually care about them, but i suppose if youve got depression its a different story.

Did you ever think that maybe their family doesnt care about them.

It's actually really selfish in a way .. [if till somebody cares about you] .. but I guess when you're that far you have to go with that ..
I cut myself, and I've tried to commit suicide a lot of times... I don't think that it's bad. The cutting helps me get through my hard times and I know not to cut too deep, so, it's not really harmful. I personally dont' think that it's wrong for someone to commit suicide, it's you life... you live it for you and not for anyone else, if someone thinks that they should die, then that's what they think. I don't understand why everyone makes such a big deal of it, when people cut themselves.

Most of the time, the person feels like no one cares for them. So if they think no one cares.. why would they go and think they are being selfish? When I came close to killing myself, it was because the fact that no one cared. And I figure most people are the same way.

I agree. Its not a big deal when you arent planning on going farther like killing yourself. It helps get rid of stress and if you dont stress so much then you wont be having any quick impulses to commit suicide.. and if it helps that.. then isnt cutting a GOOD thing?

I swear, you're one of the smartest people on here and you answer people like this: The same argument we've heard 5,000 times before that wasn't thought through or thought out by the person who said it

Explain how it's selfish. If you want to 'justify' suicide, it is your life. You can do with it as you please. You can be an amazing person, screw it up, somewhere in between or you can lose it. How is that selfish. "Oh you're miserable and depressed and are so far gone you don't even see a reason to live anymore, what a selfish bitch. How dare you even think about killing yourself, it might effect someone else."
Well, chances are, the people it would effect hadnt been thinking about the suicidal person, otherwise they would have noticed their emotions. Suicidal People are hard to understand, it isnt like they are all clones of each other, so you can't treat them all as being selfish. In my opinion, the person who thinks everyones actions should revolve around them is the self centered person.

For a long time, thats exactly what I wanted to say, I just never knew how to put it.
Yeah, I agree totally. If they had thought about the person killing themselves, and tried to help them, and show them love, etc, then chances are they would get better.
But they don't, and I mean, some people try to commit suicide for attention. Some people just do it so people realise something is wrong, they never intend to go through with it.

I think that's one o the saddest kinds of suicide. I mean, when people do it for attenetion, people always jump to conclusions and think they are just stupid, they aren't. Just pretend that you are so desperate and starving for attention, that you would make people think you're killing yourself, just so they would acknowledge the fact that you were there. Then, you think about them not even intending to end their life, and it happens. Thats more like murdering yourself, and that's just sad.

I say this over and over: it's not that simple
there are more reasons than just attention, don't think that you can understand the mind of a suicidal person....suicidal person
their thought process is more complex than yours, it's not that easy to understand, don't think you've got it yet, keep thinking
