no but i have been through other things thankyou, much worse things than cutting and self harming, and i know how hard it is to stop the things that make you feel better about yourself, self harming is just a way of making people feal sorry for you or even to give you want you want, that is just MY take on it and not yours.
So never judge a book by its cover.

I am sorry you went through whatever it is you went through that, in your mind, are much worse then self-harm (adding cutting is a bit redundent), however . Self-harm is not by any means (atleast it's not meant to and shouldn't be) a way to make people feel sorry for you. It is a coping mechanism to deal with things that are painful. For me, I was never allowed to show emotion in my household, my father found it as a weakness and would hit me if so much as a tear welled up in my eye. But this is not a "pity-me" story, it is just an example or something painful. When there's nothing else to do, cutting (or any form of self-harm) is such a relief. There's so much control...or atleast the illusion of it. And when all the endorphins are rushing through your body, you actually feel...well... okay. It's a lot like drinking to make yourself feel better. It works for the moment, but tomorrow it's still there, so, you drink again, until you become numb.
I can't say whatever you've went through was worse then SI or not because well 1) Everyone's standards of pain and suffering are based on comparision of their previous experiences and 2) well... I don't know what it is. But I can say that regardless of how you feel towards other members here, or, how they've treated you, you've no right to claim something you have no knowledge of, as you admit to never doing it before ( not that I'm suggesting it!)

Okay. So why, then, do you say that cutting it just a way to make your parents give you stuff, and feel sorry for you? If what you did was like cutting, then you sould understand why they do it, and not continually say stuff like that.
I'm sorry, but just a lot of what you have said on this thread has offended me a bit. Its not that way at all, and shouldn't you understand that, if what you did was like cutting? |

 | July 26th, 2006 at 08:10am As a person who can speak about this with a good degree of experiance- 1) I worked in a community residence for mentally ill adults for many years and 2) being mentally ill myself and have many years of treatment; here is my take on the topic.
Self harm(cutting etc)/self medicating(drinking, drugs, shopping etc) is done for CONTROL.
Everything in your life is out of control and here is this one thing that you CAN control... You can control what you do, how much you eat, how many pills you take etc. CONTROL.
Now it may not start out like that. I'll just have a beer to take the edge off... or Oh, this shirt is on sale and I don't have one like that, or I need to lose some weight.
The illness is when it goes BEYOND the simple reason reason it started...
Beyond one beer to a 12 pack a night, beyond one shirt to maxing out credit cards, beyond losing a pound to eating less than 500 calories a day.
People who have these symptoms need help. They aren't doing it for shits and giggles, or for attention, or for anything else. They are doing it becuase they don't know what else to do, it consumes them.
The trick is subsituting the BAD coping skills with GOOD coping skills. That's where treatment comes in.
It's a fine line to walk between helping and being an enabler for the illness...

i know that in some cases some kids do yu cutting has a way for people to feal sorry for them and to get what they want, and i am sorry if some of what i have said has offended you in any way that was not my intention, and i am sorry for that but that is what i think, there is more than one way to harm yourself allbeit with cutting or drink abuse or even drug abuse, and i will even say that some people who drink or take drugs is a way of getting what they want. |

| July 26th, 2006 at 10:28am I find it to be... sorta retarded. Like, cutting. Cause, my 'friend' did it- she cut onher stomach, her wrists, her leg (she wrote St. Jimmy on her leg *ROLLS EYES*). And I bitched at her about ti every day, and she would keep lying to me and telling me she stopped, but she just kept doing it. It just bugs me, cause for the cutters, thne its just like drugs apparentyl, like its addictive or something (thats what she said). And she did it for stupid reasons, like her sister called her fat. It was so stupid, so one day, I called her house, and I told her mom.
Thats just my experience with it, so it could be wrong for the majority.
But, suicide, I really dont have a problem with, not that I would do it myself, but, as long as they dont physically hurt anyone else in the process, then I really dont see a problem. If they want to end trheir life, then thats their decision. theres no use going to therapy, because most likely, the therapist wont change anything.

yeah and some do it for fashion reasons (actually i meant to say to be in with the trend) i work with a woman who cuts herself and when i asked her why she did it she said "because she see's young kids do it and she wanted to know how it fealt, and now she cant stop" and i care about her so much, she is the whole reason i work where i do, and if anything happened to her i would be gutted. |

Well, by the sounds of it, your friend obviously had a problem, and you didn't even see that. The way you talk about it, seems to me like you were very instensitive to her. She had a problem, if she kept on lying to you, then she wouldn't be an "attention seeker" but someone who actually had a problem. |
