Where has the childhood scene gone?

In my school, 'Fun' is dating and kissing and progressing from there (i'm going into 7th grade)

I still consider fun as dancing around stupidly and lip synching to My Chemical Romance.

Am I mentally retarded or something?

And it amazes me that little girls consier Hilary Duff a role model. I saw her in a dress which the V-neck went past her belly button. Which is similar to how the girls in my school are atarting to dress, only in shorts that could be mistaken as underwear and shirts that dont go past their belly button. I still don't know how that got popular.

I find that to be fun, except I would be lip-syncing to something else.

And no, you are not mentally retarded, you're just yourself, and that's cool.

girls aren't growing up to fast...they just think they're growing up...(someone else mentioned that too...)
Girls (and probably guys too) are trying to act more 'mature' to impress older boys/girls...but in reality, it makes them seem like they're trying to hard (which they probably are)
and, i don't know if someone else mentioned this or not, the kid's parents are mostly to blame. It's their choice to let their child dress that way. If they're going to buy 'skimpy' or 'slutty' clothes for their daughter, or 'in fashion styles' for their son...they can't complain too much if something happens to their kid because they let them dress that way.
as far as cell phones go...that also has to do with parents. I saw a girl who was 8 years old with a razr (or whatever it is). If her parents think she needs to call someone that desperatly (in what? 2nd grade!), then that's up to them i guess...
i guess most of it depends on the child's attitude and the parents too...some kid's are spoiled and can get anything out of their parents...and thier parents don't help it by denying them of something. I mean, yes I have a cell phone, but it broke...my papa said to get a new one, but i really don't want one...i never use it anyway...in my mind, i really could care less about a cell phone or dressing fashionably....
other kid's minds work differently though...they think having a cell phone to show off makes them seem more mature and wearing stylish clothes proves they can be 'cool' too...
i guess, in the end, it all depends on both the parent's and child's mind set...for example, i have a friend who i grew up with...we looked exactly alike when we were younger, but then she went into middle school and her mom had her wearing fake eyelashes and would dye her hair and have her load up on makeup and dress the most stylish she could...(needless to say we didn't look alike to much longer.) but, her mom wanted her to be the most popular and go out with boys...she might have still been closer looking to me if her mom didn't want her to become popular...but also, she didn't argue becoming popular...they both had the same mindset and were working towards that goal...
so really, how fast a child grows up depends on how fast they and their parents want them to grow up...

geeze i babble alot...if this gets off topic in spots...i apologize...

This has been bugging me from the first time I posted in this thread.

Cellphones
You're all judging them for having a phone? What gives you any right to decide how they use their phone and what gives you the right to judge them. I have been able to talk for 14 years now, whats the difference between when I was 1 and now on my cellphone? Did I grow up to fast when I started talking...no. Having a cellphone has absoluetly nothing to do with growing up. You're all just as bad for using that as a reason as to why they're growing up just as fast.

Clothes
Also, what gives you any right to judge what they wear? Everyone has their own personal style, no one said you had to like it. You guys are acting superior and acting as if you have the right to judge other people and say they arent living their lives correctly and growing up to fast, then you go and base your arguement as something as ignorant as clothes, Clothes are just an attatchment, they have nothing to do with the actual person. You may find something they wear to be "skimpy" or you may think its "slutty" but guess what, you're not the one wearing it. Idividuality is an extremely small light in a quickly darkening tunnel, dont put it out faster then it already is. Let them wear what they want, because it's their life, not yours.

Relationships
alright, Im 14, so this whole thread is basically targeted at people in or around my age group, let me explain things to you. People have "signinfigant others", this is when the whole idea of Dating starts. GET OVER IT. Do you know how many people talk about sex and never actually do anything 99.9% of them, because they know they're not ready. Having a boyfriend consist's of Making out in Movies, talking on MSN and holding hands in the hallway at school, yeah, thats really growing up isnt it? Rolling Eyes You guys are acting as if it's something horrible and awful, and I bet you most of you either
A- have a boyfriend/girlfriend
B- want one

So, quit judging other people and saying that they are too young to have a boyfriend. this is the only argument that remotely relates to growing up. it's natural to be attrackted to other people, when that starts happening, you can't stop it. It might not be the same attraction from the time your 12 to 21, but none the less, the attraction exists.

Body image

I can't believe this is even here. Caring about how you look means your growing up? Thats a sign of maturity, being so centered aroundthe media and wanting to be perfect? Sounds to me more like the sound of being a teenager. You were/are teenagers at one time, and reguardless of what you say, you cared about how you looked, because thats important to you. So was school (to some o_o) boys (or girls), sports, shopping, hanging with your friends. Thats stuff is important to teenagers and has been, its normal.

Here is what isnt Normal: developing eating disorders and becoming overly obsessed with your image to the point where is becomes hazzordous. Why are you guys pushing this off on young girls? Someone older can develop and eating disorder as well, are we going to say the 30-something year old is growing up to fast too? Quit mocking them for having disorders and saying that they are growing up too fast because of it, thats really what someone with an eating disorder needs to hear, something else about them isnt perfect Confused

Sexism in this thread
I love how you guys have centered this whole thread around girls, and in the thread about sexism, you were all against it. Thats totally not hypocritical...

Growing up
Based on everything you guys have said growing up involves: cellphones, short skirts (based on your idea of what short is) Boyfriends, and sex that kids arent even having.

Is that seriously how you pictutre growing up? If it is, I think you all have alot of growing up too do. Growing up is about maturing and realizing the world isnt centered around you, taking responability, making your own choices, becoming a good person that you want to be, paying attention to your education because it is important. Thats growing up. You're telling me thats happening to fast? Well, I strongly disagree, that can never happen to fast.

well the thread is called aren GIRLS growing up to fast?

it seems to me that the media are trying to push the kids into haveing sex early by saying and almost making kids grow up fast, let me ask you what is wrong with getting dirty and climbing trees and just being kids, sex isnt what its all made outm to be everyone. You have plenty of time to do sex.

i just think its sick that we have new teenage artists (singers) singing about sexual things. There is one girl Cassie who sings about how she wants to give it to one guy nad she love him all the way down. Maybe i jsut have a sick mind but thats doesnt sound age apporpriate for a 13/14/15 year old (she is 16)

i agree, people in the public eye should be aware of what they are sinign about and the fall out it will have on kids, when i was younger Magne Furuholmen started smoking and like an idiot i did aswell, so they should think before they sing abut things that are not age appropiate

Ok, if this turns into Music is bad, they should stop, I'll scream. You CAN NOT blame music for lack of parenting. Musicians should have creative freedom to sing about whatever they please. they make Music they deem approperiate for them, not for 12 year old kids.

Music is media, and it does influence kids, but that is no reason musicians should bend and twist to fit needs of other people. Parents should play an active role in kids lives. If something is inapproperiate for their kids, they need to step up and act like parents. The musicians didnt have their kids, why should they take care of them?

again i agree you can only blame the perants for lack of peranting, but you cannot know what your kids are doing 24/7 its impossible.

Agreed artists should be aloud to sing about what they want but some of those musicans and celebraties should watch what they say like for example there's this on going fight between these two British singers Cheryl Tweedy and Charlotte Church. Now Charlotte is a size 12 which is average Cheryl is (of course) some what below the average size and Cheryl has been saying that Charlotte is "fat" "has really let herself go" and when asked her opinion on Charlotte's Walker crisps add she replyed "The one where she's stuffing her face? Very appropriate!"
I mean for feck sake I'm about the same size as Charlotte, I know tonnes of girls who are too or bigger than her and hearing Charlotte being called fat makes them (and me) feel pretty fucking awful. People who are in the public eye need to start thinking about the implications of what they say because whether they want to or not they have a responiblity to the people who look up to them.

i don't think the wieght issue has anything to do with growing up fast , i only mentioned some of the younger artists because sex is thought to be a mature adult thing. Kids think growing up being an adult = sex.

Ok, well if you don't think you can be everywhere, thats fine, but it isnt the responsability of musicians to make sure the world is safe for your kids.

i heard yesterday that when my kids go back to school in September the girls will have to wear skirts that go below they're knees, its about time. if tehy come to school wearing a short skirt they will be sent home and if they keep doing it then the perants can be fined.

I don't know. Anymore, all I see is a whole bunch of girls that want to be something else. They wear all make-up and mini-skirts so a guy will think she is cute, or whatever. For an older person, 16, 15, 14 maybe, thats not bad. For a 10 year old it IS. All these small kids are getting into things that they should not. They have sex and drink often, and whatever else.

it doesnt happen so much round where i am. but there was an 11 year old in the news who got pregnant on a drunken night out with friends. what kind of parent lets their 11 year old go out and get pissed? and the worst thing is the mother is proud of her. that is not a good parent. i dont think parents should have total control of their kids, but teaching them how to look after themselves is one of the most important parts of being a parent.
