That's not a very comforting thought, even if it is true. Because if that's what's "fashionable" right now...dayum. Of course it's fashionable. If it's being advertised it had to be fashionable otherwise, what's the point of advertising? Not only that, but the whole 'I'm-a-slut-but-that's-cool sorta thing is being promoted with 'teen idols' if you like, such as Madam Paris Hilton, Princess Spears, Goddess Lindsey Lohan, and Sensational X-tina Aguilera. I mean, this is what some kids actually think about those women. They idolise them when they are just behaving like prostitues who actually have money. |

Exactly. I mean, there's some truth in "It takes a village to raise a child". And I know Snicket fans (like me!) might laugh at that, but its true. Its partly society's and the media's job to make sure that today's kids don't grow up to be tomorrow's whores. Unless of course, those people actually think that Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are people to be looked up to. |

My old 6 year old next door neighbour had a phone and i was like wtf? I don't think a six year old having a mobile is bad, at least it probably shows that her parents are concered for her well being. Infact, it definately shows her parents are concered about her because I don't think a six year old could get a cell phone by herself.
Tell me something, how old are you? And how old are your parents? I know that you have a computer now, but how old were you when you first got a computer or at least had access to one? And how old were your parents when they first had access to a computer? Maybe 30 year old if they were young and lucky, eh? But, for most parents of the people on this site, it's like 40 or so. Now let's compare that to our age, which is a big gap. Bigger than the one between us and that six year old.
My point is, is that we were just as advantaged as she is now, but you're just taking everything you've got for granted. Of course the youngest generation will be in for the better. Not forever, but for now they are. So just chill, there's no need to prejudice her just because she's young.Such an ageist. |

but then theres the whole kids that are six going around with mini skirts and tops that are way too short I don't think that it's the kids that are growing old too fast. Think about it. How do the six year olds find these sluttly clothes to wear? In shops which will sell strapless tube shirts and mini skirts at a size that would actually accomadate a six year old's body.
This is from advertisement and fashion expansion. Don't you notice that now more than ever, old ladies are also trying to look the same age that the six year olds are trying to achive? Everyone wants to be 19 to 20ish. It's because our bodies have been designed through evolution to look our best at that age.
As my maths teacher says, I feel sorry for kids that are ugly at the age of 16 because they will never ever be any better looking than that without surgery. That's is a cruel thing to say, but it is true. And women in particular of all ages are trying to get at any means of drinking from the Fountain of Youth. I actually did not realise that until I saw what you posted above, thank you for enlightening me.
It's the pressure that so called 'Teen Queens' and 'Pop Idols' have been putting on their younger fans to look and act that beautiful. The reason why it's more apparent now than ever before is because sex is not a taboo in the media any more and clothing companies aren't limited to making conservative clothing because 'everybody else is doing it too'. *Sigh.* Conformity.
As for twelve year olds getting wasted...it's nothing new to me. My grand and great-grand parents were doing the same. |

You are growing up too fast. At 11, I didn't wear any make-up, and I did listen to Green Day, but it was different then. Kids now don't know how to handle things that are in the media. |

I wasn't being ageist. When I found out she had a phone it just shocked me at how young she was or why she would need it. To be honest, I do think a 6 year old is young.
My parents are quite old. They got acess to the pc when it was an affordable price (as they were even more expensive when they first came out to now). I am 15 if you want to know, I first got to use the PC when I was 13.
Where I grow up, computers and owning a mobile phone is for older teenagers and adults as I am from a very rough area but parents are very protective of there children. A lot of parents around where I live do not want there children being able to veiw unsuitable things that are easily acessed through the internet or with a mobile phone. Also, owning such equipment is too likely for your house to be robbed or for you to be mugged. |

if you got access to a computer at such a young age, don't you think a six year old can have a cell phone at a younger age? I mean, you used a PC let's say around thirty years younger than your parents. And this girl is only nine years younger than you so I think it's fair. |

Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 11991 | January 15th, 2007 at 12:08pm Well to me cellphones and computers mean nothing about growing up. As a say to my mother all the time 'this is the iPod generation' [ipod generalizing all of the electronics ect.] Same with clothes, people aren't as, i can't think of the word, concerned? about overing up. its fashion these days. Do I think its wrong to see girls around 10 wearing miniskirts and tube tops, yes. I saw a girl the other day at thr mall couldn't of been much older then 11 or 12 who obviously rolled her shirt up to expose her stomach after her mom dropped her off. All to attract boys. But i think thats part of growing up too.
whatever i think i'm just rambling now. I hope i atleast got the idea across. |

 | January 16th, 2007 at 12:35pm Has anyone read The Chronicles of Narnia? Either in the last one or second to last one, Polly (who grows old) says that Susan is no longer a Friend of Narnia because she's now concerned with nothing other than men and lipstick and invitations. She says that she spent her childhood trying to take as little time possible to get the silliest point in one's life and will spend the rest of her life trying to stay there as long as possible.
I find that relevant. I mean, when you're six, being a grown up is the coolest thing ever (Ex: "My aunt said I look like I'm eight years old!" and everyone wants to be older when they're a kid. But when you're ten, eleven years old, you do not want to become Susan Pevensy. I didn't really know that five years ago, and neither did anyone else in my class. They all went around with their fancy LipSmackers lipglosses and wore their hair out and got haircuts and I wanted to be like them. But I didn't cut my hair until I was twelve (other than getting it trimmed every few months) and I would always beg my mom to buy me one of those sparkly tubes of LipSmackers. I didn't get one until I was twelve and I learned that if you wear lipgloss, chewing your mouth is not a good idea because LipSmackers smell good but taste NASTY.
Ahem.
But yeah. My mother understood that a kid has to act his/her age. Or you'll find yourself closer to the path of the Stupid Girls of Pink's song. |
