At the risk of seeming stupid, how the heck do you do it? All I wind up doing is making clicky noises on the string or else just sounding like a normal guitar. Yeah, and my other problem, is keeping my palm on with strumming. Is there any tips, or is it one of those things you just gotta work at?

just put your palm on the strings just in front of the bridge. you can ajust the sound by sliding it back and forth a little... it takes practice to get it right, so just keep at it. Very Happy
also,if you lighten your left hand grip, it will be a little more mutted.

if you feel your over-muting then its probably better to put your hand on the bridge and let your hand flab go over the bridge and onto the strings, it gets the best sound.

I had troubles with it too but if you just practice and try stuff than it will work. that's how I did it.

To be honest I don't know if I'm doing it right.
But it sounds right and the way you ppl explain it..
I think I'm right..

Simple man.

1. Rest your hand so it is on the bridge, not touching any strings with the flesh between your pinky and wrist actually touching the bridge.

2. Slide your hand very slowly onto the strings while playing a power chord. Let's say... A5.

577XXX

3. Carry on sliding very slowly until the chord sounds kinda dull, but you can still make it out.

Now, you've found your little magic hand position. Get an idea of where it is, and you'll be able to put it on and off instantly, most punk bands that use palm muting play chords like this.

(PM = palm muted. O=Open)

PM-PM-PM-O
PM-PM-PM-o

If you follow. A series of palm muted chords, then an open one.

Step 1. -- hold finger on fret space you want

Step 2. -- As Close as you can to the bridge, put your on the strings

Step 3. -- Hit it

And if your having trouble with strumming align your hand that is muting so that Your D string And your G make a stripe that centers on your hand.

The smallest finger? No. Won't work. Use your palm. Hence the name "Palm muting".

it's hard as fuck cuz you're not only trying to mute strings, but also trying to strum them right and try to remember the rest of the song all at the same time X) lol. i have great troubles with it so i say 'fuck it' and just go ahead and strum all of the strings regardless if it sounds shitty Very Happy

It's a pain in the ass at first, but if you keep trying, you'll get it eventually and you'll wonder why you had a problem in the first place.

And remember... YOU CAN DO IT Up
