Green Day Has Stadium Sound
September 11, 2005
By KENNETH PARTRIDGE, Special to the Courant

Before Green Day took the stage at the Hartford Civic Center Friday night
and began blasting away like a three-barreled musical confetti cannon, the
band's pre-show warmup tape featured two songs that set the tone perfectly
for what was to follow: the Village People's "YMCA" and the Ramones'
"Blitzkrieg Bop."

Therewere elements of both selections in Green Day's performance, which
included plenty of stripped-bare punk songs, a la the Ramones, as well as
audience-participation gimmicks, pyrotechnics bursts, and shimmering lights
- things typically reserved for more frivolous pop acts trying to work up an
audience.

This unlikely marriage of punk rock and stadium rock is one the trio from
Berkley, Calif., manages quite well these days, thanks especially to material
from its latest (and greatest) album, "American Idiot." Opening with the disc's
title track, the band more than matched the mega-wattage it took to power its
giant lighting rigs.

Following with the cleverly arranged, multipart "Jesus of Suburbia" and hard-hitting
"Holiday" - prefaced by lead singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong as being
anti-war, not anti-American - the group kept kids in all corners of the sold-out
coliseum on their feet, fists in the air.

The "Idiot" songs went over so well, in fact, it was almost a letdown when the
band abandoned the album after "Are We Waiting" - a sort of prom theme encouraging
listeners to slow dance with their own insecurities - to run through older tunes
such as "Longview," "Basket Case," and "2000 Light Years Away."

On "Knowledge," the band turned to the most novel part of its spectacle-laced
show: picking kids from the crowd to play guitar, bass, and drums. Perhaps signaling
bad news for Hartford's music scene in years to come, the chosen bass player and
drummer (the latter eventually hauled away by Green Day drummer Tre Cool) struggled
through the song's simple progression, leading Armstrong to dub them "the Disasters."

Back behind its instruments, Green Day saved two of its finest performances for
the encore: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and a surprisingly non-silly cover of
Queen's "We are the Champions." Though the songs offer entirely different sentiments,
nearly everyone in the audience sang along to both as if they were written
specifically about their own lives.

Armstrong ended with a solo "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," lending further
credence to what the previous two hours had already gone a long way to prove:
Green Day, for better, not for worse, has become U2 for the PlayStation generation.
