I dont think we have a topic on this, at least not in the Entertainment section of the board.

So as the title suggests, it's a place to list the books you recommend and for GSBians to request a book that fits with a category they want to read about.

Example
'I'm looking for a really good teen horror book, anybody know any?'

So yeah. Post away.

Cool

Bollocks, I have a really good book to recommend but I cant remember the author's last name.

It's called Speak and the authors first name is Louise.

It's about a really outcast girl [We are talking proper outcast, not a persopn who thinks shes an outcast but has like a billion friends] who goes to an American high school and it's basically just following her school year and gradually as her life degrades she learns to stand up and yell out cause she is really shy and hardly ever talks to people. There's loads of events and theres a little twist in it which explains why she doesnt have any friends anymore. It really is an interesting book. I'll try and find out the authors full name

Laurie Halse Anderson. She came to speak at our middle school last year because we had just finished reading another one of her books called Fever 1793, and there just happened to be some librarian or authors convention, so our librarian got her to come speak to us.

Here's a great book

The Bumblebee Flies Anyway
Robert Cormier

It's about this boy named Barney Snow who's at this "clinic" where they experiment medicine on dying people to save future generation. Barney supposedly isn't going to die so they use him for memory tests where they can erase your short term memory for a period of time. Barney uses euphemisms to make things sound better than they are as well. In the middle he starts getting some problems, but I don't want to say anymroe.

I'm not sure of the author's name but I think it's the one I listed.

Trainspotting: the book.... if your into a good read.. a bit of a tough read.. but a good read.

And than Heart Breaking Work Of Staggering Genius..

Which is written by Dave Eggers, and by him (It's a creative non-fiction or memoir of sorts) about how both of his parents died.. right within a month of eachother.. and he was only 21 (If i remember corectly) and he had to take care of his little brother...

It's REALLLLY good.. and REALLLY funny. My mom (who is a college english preffesor) teaches bits of it to her class.. because it breaks all of the suposed "rules" of a memoir and non-fiction peice.

I would post an excerpt but I don't feel like writing it our right now. I will some other time though.

This is also a pretty tough read, but its one of the BEST books I have ever read in my entire life. It's a college level book.

Dave eggers is also a journalist.. and I dunno if he still does or not.. but he used to have a column in SPIN magazine.

And than Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs: By chuck klosterman...

who. along with dave eggers is one of my idols Smile. He's a senior writer for SPIN.

It's just a collection of pop culture essays.. he's a really witty writer, and also very very very good. A lot of his essays in that book I can't help but read over and over again because they're just so damn good and clever Smile. He's amazing.

Three words:

Tuesdays With Morrie (by Mitch Albom.)

It's a really touching book about life, death, love and the world. It's about this Guy (Mitch Albom) who, when he learns that his old professor Morrie is dying of ALS goes to visit him. The result is a final class about life. The resulting thesis is the book. I would recommend it to anyone. It really makes you think about life a bit more.

Also, if you want a good laugh, get some Adrian Mole.

I was going to write a recommendation for this. It's seriously one of the most thought provoking books you'll ever read.

I read that book for school and could not stand it. It felt like it dragged on and onnnnnnnnnn. It's pretty short but I definitely wouldn't recommend me.

The Boy Called "It" i cant remember who wrote it

but its a true story its about this little boy (the man who wrote it but he is now grown up) and how his mother was really sweet when he was younger but then he got a little older and his mother got abusive and there were like 4 kids and he was the only one she abused and she wouldnt feed him so he stole food from the cafeteria (because he was starving) and she found out and forced him to vomit it back up and eat it again

overall its a really good book like its sad but its really good i liked that book a lot
