From Himalayan villages to Eastern European cities, people - especially women and girls - are attracted by the prospect of a well-paid job as a domestic servant, waitress or factory worker. Traffickers recruit victims through fake advertisements, mail-order bride catalogues and casual acquaintances.

Upon arrival at their destination, victims are placed in conditions controlled by traffickers while they are exploited to earn illicit revenues. Many are physically confined, their travel or identity documents are taken away and they or their families are threatened if they do not cooperate. Women and girls forced to work as prostitutes are blackmailed by the threat that traffickers will tell their families. Trafficked children are dependent on their traffickers for food, shelter and other basic necessities. Traffickers also play on victims' fears that authorities in a strange country will prosecute or deport them if they ask for help.

introduction Trafficking is the fastest growing means by which people are forced into slavery. It affects every continent and most countries. A US Government report published in 2003, estimates that at least 800,000-900,000 people worldwide are trafficked each year. Human trafficking involves the movement of people through violence, deception or coercion for the purpose of forced labour, servitude or slavery-like practices. It is slavery because traffickers use violence, threats, and other forms of coercion to force their victims to work against their will. This includes controlling their freedom of movement, where and when they will work and what pay, if any, they will receive. It is impossible to know exactly how many people are trafficked and statistics are difficult to obtain because trafficking is an underground activity.

Human Trafficking happens in every part of the world, there are up to 4,000 children sold into slavery in Britain and a 100,000 in America. The reason because their is a market for humans, how can we let this continue? is it through ignorance that people don't believe it happens in their country, in their city, in their neighbourhood. We are in an age where the villians can be the old lady next door.

In short, 21st century slave trade.
It wasn't okay then, it most certainly isn't now. Sad, that we have to resort to this in this day and age.

But how can it be stopped? this is virtually impossible to stop when its so unheard of, people just aren't aware of it. I think more needs to be done to raise awareness.

I think this is a severly neglected issue. I know this isn't the prostititoon thread, but they are linked in some cases. Prostitues are forced into doing things against their will, thats slavery. I think people like to imagine that slavery is gone and over, destroyed almost, but it's anything but. In The United States, an amendment to the constitution(the 21st I think, but I could be wrong) and ever since then, people would like to think it's gone and over with, when really it's only gotten worse. Now it's keep secret and hidden, so that the public doesnt even know that it's happening. Children and women are being forced into all types of jobs against their will and we're setting back and allowing it to happen, when was the last time you heard a politician talk about Human Trafficking and trying to end it?

I watched an Episode of law and Order the other night. It was about Children being imported from Africa into slavery. Their parents were lied to and told that their children were being taken to schools that were very highly reguarded and that they would be able to lead a healthy, productive life in America. What really happened is they were crammed onto boats, shipped through illegal harbors and stored in warehours like a product. A human being was stored. Then they were sold to the "upper class" as slaves to do housework and kept illegally. The show ended with the warehouse being busted and the kids being saved, a happy ending. Then, at the end of the show, it said "the events in this show were based on an actual story of a young girl name.." and I don't remember her name, even If I did I would butcher the spelling because it was African.

Thats one happy story, the warehouse was busted, but in reality, that doesnt happen as often as it should. As we speak, thousands of people living horendeous lives against their will. I cna only imagine the sick things these people have to do. What would happen if a pedophile bought Children? No one would know he has them. What if a rapist buys people? or a Murderer? Those are worst case scenarios, but reguardless of who or where they go, it's limiting their freedom and thats awful. No one should ever have to live a life like that.

I agree, with the lack of knowledge the public has about the subject, it's winning in our 'battle' to stop it. Only an elite gropu of people care enough to do anything, and they cant save the world by themselves.

Prostitution is a choice. Prostitutes are paid for what they do.

The politics of prostitution are not so simple, just as the politics of human trafficking are not so simple. When your life depends on obeying someone, generally you do it, no questions asked. But when money, when business gets involved, then it's a different story altogether. It's the sort of thing that people who know won't talk about. It's dangerous.
That's why no one hears about it, even though it's statistically a huge problem.

Thats the thing, prostitution isn't always a choice. You can be forced into prostitution and still be paid. When you taken to another country and you don't understand it's laws, and your life is at risk, you do what you're told. Sometimes you might make money, that doesnt mean they enjoy it or it was their choice.

that`s just wrong. i agree with you guys, slavery still isn`t abolished. especially that sweatshop issue. a classmate of mine did a report on that, and stores like wal-Mart, Kohl`s and maybe target clothes were made by people in sweatshops. they usually hire kids because ''they will complain less''. but inside, they`re probably screaming. and i was watching CSI sometime last year, and it was about this prostitution case. some guy was working undercover to expose a prostitution ring. the people in charge had illeagally brought girls around 15 or 14 from Russia. the girls' teachers told them that they had an oppurtunity to come to America and they accepted. they brought their clothes and everything and were shipped in a tiny boat to an illegal harbor. they brought to some building and were told they couldn`t see sunlight and couldn`t go outside and all that. and then they were prostitutes. they undercover guy pretended to work there and secretly brought a 15 year old girl out and to the police station to testify all said above. when brought back, the two of them were caught, but in order to save the 15 year old (Sasha or something) and the other girls, he had to lie and to verify the lie that she snuck out on her own, he beat her up. it was really hard for him. later on, the reingleader of the prostituion ring was suspicious and thought they were being watched. he took sasha and killed her, suspecting it was her. in the end, it was a happy ending, except that it was so wrong that 25 year old had to die.
yeah, this should be in the prostitution thread, but it is an example of human trafficking. it`s just wrong. people shouldn`t be forced to do anything or be tricked. it violates their human rights. people should be treated as people, not as oblects.

haven't you ever heard the Sublime song Wrong Way?
seven horny brothers and a drunk dad told her to prostitute for the family and that's how she was raised, what else does she know?

and it's not so fictional as much as it is universal
I think prostitution should be legal, but you must have a license
that way the prostitutes are of age, know what they're getting in to (they aren't forced by anyone else), it's clearly a choice, and they have no STDs

liscenses can be forged, just like Driving Liscenes are. Just because they don't have STD's when they start doesnt mean they can't get them and spread them around. Who's to say some Pimp wouldnt get them a liscense and force them into doing things they don't want to do? It happens all the time when it isnt legal, imagine what will happen when it is.

that's why there would be lisence renewal (I know I butchered the spelling, but I'm growing up to be a pimp

pimps don't have to forge it when there a million girls who qualify and we make the license process easy (like the girls who grew up admiring Paris Hilton

If prostitution was made legal this Trafficking would become more common.

Police would no longer have the right to raid brothels because it would be a secure business so young children and women would continue to be used in this type of slavery.

Identification and licenses can be forged they already have worked around the system to do this and you want to make it easier for them?

what about the child sex trade, If you make prostitution legal there mean there will be a legal age, yet that can be easily forged. You would be putting young children at risk.

Oh a Nick the thing about how ''pimps'' would not have to forge identification, there are many sexual acts that many Paris Hilton wannabe's would not want to commit, for example bondage, abusive sex. There is a market for this type of thing if they casn't find it in America lets say they import girl who will.

To bring them over they lie to them and keep them captive, but to continue running this scheme all they need is for them to get a license, easy enough, threaten her life, or her families life. tell her that because she's not in her country she will be deported, where she can easily be re-captured or killed.,

what holds these girls are fear.

I think it's despicable that people actually enslave people. I read an article about this, and it said that the dealers promised the girls they could go free once they earned a certian amount of money, but they kept increasing the amount they had to earn for the dealer, and so the girls would never go free.

It's horrible and disgusting.

I suppose that just goes to show how little of an issue can be showed if people want it covered up.

I don't think people realize the situation these girls are in. Liscenses wouldn't help a girl get over her fear of a dominating figure.

People need to read this thread. They need to know how serious it is and how totally unacceptable it is of governments and countries to sweep it under the carpet.

How the fact that somewhere in your town or city there could be a brothel and how easily you could walk past it every day labelling the girls you see there whores and sluts, when their prisoners.

I want you to know that even when you live in the free'st nation in the world there are still slaves.
