Final Breaths (Story Poem)

This is a really sad poem, so don't read if you're happy

She’s too scared to answer the phone
She relives the night and hears the tone
It begs her to pick up and heed its strong call
But she would be happy if it weren’t there at all
She looks at the picture and sees his face
Sees his eyes with such powerful grace
She looks in the mirror and can’t believe the sight
For she is the reason that he died tonight

The call was from the E.R. they need her there fast
She gets in her car and she never looks back
The people on the street seem to laugh and they sneer
And suddenly death has become her worst fear
The tears fog up her eyes and she can hardly see
Driving gets tougher and demons smile with glee
Her tires lock up and she swerves off the lane
Her body is racked with insurmountable pain

She opens her eyes and sees the white light
She thinks she has died too on this night
She looks to her left and sees his strong face
His eyes again shining with powerful grace
He looks like he’s crying and she wonders why
And she sees the tear fall from his eye
She turns to her right and sees her mother
While one person lived, death took another

He stares at her body with terrible woe
How could he stand by and just watch her go
He slams his fist down on the table nearby
And then he lets out a horrible cry
He was the one that God needed to take
He was closer to death and for her it was too late
How he survived was loving her true
But for living, he pondered, he was a fool

He left the E.R. with a scar in his heart
Such perfect love should not be apart
He chose to walk his way home in the rain
Trying to forget about his hideous pain
He was in no condition for this kind of stress
He fell to his knees and heaved from his chest
Blood splattered the cracked cement
He looked in the puddle and felt his descent

Final breaths were taken this night
This tragedy worsened two children’s plight
The saddest part is, this happens all the time
