| Lucifers Angel King For A Couple Of Days Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 4751 | Police raid Pee-wee's house November 29, 2001 BY BILL ZWECKER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST Chicago Sun Times Paul Reubens, best-known for his squeaky-voiced Pee-wee Herman character, is again facing the possibility of a serious scandal with strong--and highly disturbing--sexual overtones. The actor and comedian's Hollywood home was searched on Nov. 16 by Los Angeles police, following up on a tip alleging that Reubens had child pornography. A Los Angeles police source told the Sun-Times that hundreds of boxes of material were seized. Next week's National Enquirer will report the items included nearly 2,000 videotapes, many boxes of pornographic pictures, magazines and books, and three computers containing lewd material. "It was pretty sleazy stuff," the police source said. In the most damaging allegation, the source said police found several photos of naked, apparently underage boys. Some were pictured "performing solo sex acts,'' Enquirer editor David Perel told the New York Post. Police had a search warrant, but Reubens permitted the search without objection, the Post reported. The police source said the Reubens raid was part ''of an ongoing criminal investigation into child pornography rings in the Los Angeles area... a form of criminal activity that, unfortunately and very tragically, we have seen dramatically increase in the past few years.'' Reubens has not been charged with anything. His publicist, who requested anonymity, told the Post that the actor will be ''completely vindicated. ...The story that my client has child pornography is false. ...This is a case of a search based on a financially motivated, fabricated claim by an individual.'' The spokesman would not identify the individual or comment further on his implication that Reubens, 49, was the victim of some sort of blackmail. He called Reubens' collection an assemblage of ''kitsch art and erotica. . . . His house is like a museum. He is a very big pop-art collector from outer-space images to vintage advertisements to Pee-wee Herman memorabilia.'' The story was creating a firestorm in Hollywood entertainment circles Wednesday, with both television and film studio executives predicting dire consequences for Reubens' career, which has been slow to rebound since his 1991 arrest for indecent exposure. Reubens made coast-to-coast headlines when police caught him masturbating in a Sarasota, Fla., adult movie theater. After pleading no contest, he paid a $50 fine and performed 75 hours of community service. But the terrible publicity forced CBS to cancel his Saturday morning children's program, ''Pee-wee's Play-house.'' There Reubens played the peculiar, bow-tied man-child he created as a Los Angeles comedian and later played in two movies, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" (1985) and "Big Top Pee-wee" (198  . ''There are some things that clearly don't permanently ruin a career--drug abuse and alcoholism being the obvious ones,'' one top TV executive said Wednesday. ''But anything involving sex with children or abuse of any kind is deadly--and should be. ...If this is proved true, he's finished.'' Reubens has staged a minor comeback of late with appearances in the films ''Blow'' and ''Mystery Men.'' Over the summer he hosted the short-lived ABC game show ''You Don't Know Jack.'' While morals clauses are included in every Hollywood contract, Reubens reportedly has faced especially stringent language since returning to acting in the mid-'90s. ''He understood that and accepted it,'' said a top studio official familiar with Reubens' deal for ''Mystery Men.'' ''But if he's charged in this case, it won't be a case of strong language," the executive said. "There won't be any language, because no one will dare hire him.'' |
