A Faulty Antidote

Some of you may remember that I once dedicated a poem to my cousin Michael, who was in the hospital on Christmas. Well, now it's seven months and a few failed surgeries later, and the doctors have given up on salvaging his arm. They've decided to amputate it. His prosthetic arm is going to cost $25,000 without any help from insurance. This isn't the end of his year-long nightmare that I was hoping for. He actually witnessed his bone falling apart through the hole in his arm, and now there's no hope. I'm a bit, no, incredibly mad at the world right now, so I decided to take out my anger with some mild alliteration! ^_^

A Faulty Antidote

The results are in:
We’ve given up on you.

Our faith in modern medicine now mocks us;
It’s trickled down to the certainty of failure.
There are no surgeries left to perform,
And the common excuse is “You should have been careful.”
Accidents may happen but they never get this bad.
Remember, we’re safe as long as we have the means to pay for it.

We’ll just look for another way out
While you lie here watching your own bones disintegrate.
Just blow it off because nothing can be done.
All that’s audible in the dulled night air is
A symphony of sobs and sighs and cries of anguish.
We’re too choked up to speak above the music.

I won’t mention it and you won’t think about it.
Have we reached a reasonable accord?
It was always fine when it didn’t mean much;
Common injuries don’t get much sympathy these days
Because disease is nothing more than a numbered error.
Count away, but forget remembering to cure it.

Instead we’ll hide it behind replicas;
Copies have always been the next best thing.
But on this scale, is false good enough?
No one should always settle for less,
Or regret’s voice might be heard too often.
After all, artificiality isn’t real without reality.

Stop telling me why you can’t and fix everything.

I love it. It had so much more impact once you'd explained the meaning behind it. I mean, jeez, that's really screws. I don't know what to say, really. But I especially loved the line

That was absolutely beautiful. I loved it.
I'm terribly sorry about your cousin though. One of my cousins had a similar thing happen to her. It seemed like a normal injury (she fell off a slide, actually) but it turned out much worse than we could have imagined. I'm really sorry. I hope the amputation goes well for him.

that's an awesome poem; relatable. my parents are always in the hospital. my dad was shark fishing, and he got scratched by it and got a really bad infection from it. he was 5 mins. or so away from amputating it. it must really suck.
