WHEN you think of heavy metal, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE aren't the first band that spring to mind.
So it is no wonder that fans were outraged to learn the emo outfit would be headlining the first night of the hard rock Download Festival.
The three-day event celebrates its fifth anniversary this year at the spiritual home of metal, Donington Park.
And they are letting their fans get involved with its planning by opening Internet forums and even holding a meeting in a Soho pub last week.
High ticket prices and the need for safer camping were issues on some minds at the debate - but the main complaint from Download lovers was the corporate choice of My Chemical Romance.
Luckily director Stuart Galbrath had two solid arguments to win the doubters over.
A fan at the pub told us: "I'm still no MCR fan but Stuart was right when he said that to bring in the bands us true fans want to see, they need ticket sales to pay for them.
"The only way that can happen is by having some of the more controversial acts that are guaranteed to pull in the newbies to this kind of music.
"Also I'm hoping he is right and that those who come to see My Chemical Romance will go home as fans of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and LAMB OF GOD."
Bosses are expecting to exceed year's attendance of 70,000 through a mix of cult metal and mainstream bands.
Those on the bill include IRON MAIDEN, LINKIN PARK, MARILYN MANSON, SLAYER, KORN and BIFFY CLYRO.
