To finish their third and latest album, "The Black Parade," the members of New Jersey screamo giants My Chemical Romance had to battle depression, drug addiction and real-life ghosts. All in a day's work, says front man Gerard Way of the disc that owes its inspiration to Queen and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," contains the epic hit singles "Welcome to the Black Parade" and "Famous Last Words," and even features a cameo by Liza Minnelli. My Chemical Romance plays March 15 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Tickets are on sale now. We spoke with Way by phone.

Q: You recorded "The Black Parade" in a haunted house.

A: Right.

Q: You lost your girlfriend of six years.

A: Right.

Q: Your brother nearly had a mental breakdown.

A: Right.

Q: And you pretty much became homeless.

A: Yeah.

Q: Was it worth it?

A: That's a really interesting question. The answer is yes. I think that's OK. A lot of things come at a high cost emotionally. Was it worth it? Yeah, because what we made is so unique and the ultimate form of self-expression. It's one of the loudest self-expressing records. So I think anything we may have lost was completed by the record.

Q: Yes, but it doesn't sound like much fun.

A: Here's the thing. When you're actually an artist and you're ambitious and you're trying to accomplish stuff, the bottom line is every time you sit down and make a record it's going to be like this. It's just a matter of fact. Relationships are going to get destroyed. People are going to get divorced. People are going to lose houses. It's just the way it goes.

Q: Are you sure?

A: Yeah. I think that's all right. I think you don't get into this band without knowing there's a certain kind of sacrifice and there are going to be casualties. I finally realized I'm the same as I was in high school, which is the kid in the black T-shirt who doesn't get along with the cool kids. Nothing has changed about that. I'm really OK with that now, and I'm really happy with that. Nothing's changed about my life except that I'm in magazines.

Q: By the way, I saw the best headline about you today. It said, "Gerard Way: 'I stalked Christina Ricci.' "

A: Oh, yeah. That's actually true. I say "stalked" for comical effect, but we used to shop at the same record store and I was real into her when I was, like, 17.

Q: She's not a bad person to stalk.

A: I don't think so either. I like the fact that she's a nonconformist Hollywood person. I'm into it.

Q: Have you ever considered therapy?

A: I think therapy is great. There is a moment when you're like, "Is this going to change me?" It's the same thing with drinking. When I quit drinking and doing drugs, I was like, "Is this going to make me softer? Is this going to make me lame?" And then I realized that mental illness, drug addiction and liquor are all things that really hold you back as an artist. And they're meant to hold you back, because artists can be dangerous.

Q: That doesn't sound paranoid at all.

A: I'm not being paranoid or conspiracy driven, but I think, to an extent, all that stuff is out there to keep you down as an artist. So it was a fairly easy decision to go ahead and make myself feel better.

And yeah, I've seen Waycest up close and live. Pretty much the whole crowd shuddered in unison. Gerard needs to keep his hand away from his brother's crotch, I swear.

My Chemical Romance deffinitly has an honourable mention in my yearbook write up.
