No, this is not a thread for people to openly talk about sex O_o.

But what's the stand on openly discussing sex and sexual issues? People get embrarrased easily (well, a lot of people. not all of them), and they consider it taboo in a lot of countries. When we were reading Romeo and Juliet in eight grade, half the class blushed when the word "breast" appeared. And it was talking about breast as in the are of the body where the heart is.

In health class, for the two weeks we spent on reproductive systems, the whole class was dead-silent. No one was asking questions or anything. When the teacher asked us "You all know what intercourse is, right? I mean, you understand?" we were all like, red-faced (I admit it) and he asked us to tell him what it was. No one raised their hand.

You might say that it was because it was a room full of eight graders (I'm in tenth now). But the truth is, no one treats sex like an objective bodily function. It's dirty. It's sick. Rolling Eyes People don't treat it like it's normal.

I mean, okay, it spreads diseases. Be wary. But come on! The other day when we were learning about HIV/AIDS in biology and the teacher mentioned (in a very shaky voice) that we should practice safe-sex and use a condom, the boy who sits behind me goes "Ma'am, why do we have to learn something so disgusting?".

K, so I'm done with my mini-rant. Any thoughts?

I have an addition to make. A lot of people (including me Embarassed ) treat sex and sexual behavior like its a joke. They make fun of it and joke about it and stuff and no one takes it seriously, which makes it harder for people to discuss it openly and honestly and truthfully and seriously and all that-ly.

I think thats what is really good. My mom always talks to me openly, and some parents avoid the subject. Thats bad cause it can lead to worse problems.

avoiding it will only lead to trouble, i was taught that sex was dirty and to be avoided at all costs, that lead to me being scared of it, until i met myhusband and now i ahve 3 kids, i ahve to keep telling my kids that its not dirty, and it should be between two consenting adults, they have asked me why penis's get hard, and my daughter has asked me why use condoms (she was only 6 at the time) and i have answered those to the best of my ability, but my youngest who is just 7 asked me the other day "mum if i cut my willy of will that make me a girl?"

I don't remember my parents really talking about sex with me, but my mom didn't censor what I watched so I learned about it that way. I don't get uncomfortable with the subject of sex, it's been around in my education at school since grade four and the people in my health class wouldn't be embarrassed about that sort of discussion, more immature for laughs if anything.
I think it's important for a person to be aware of sex, but there's a medium between knowing too much and being too sheltered, it's about knowing what's appropriate.

This was the extent of my sex talk with my mother:

"Do you know what men and women do when they're married?"
"Yes...? o_o"
"Good."

And that was the end of that.

Maybe I socialise in a more open environment, but everyone I know (friends-wise), well, loves sex. No one I know is embarassed or thinks it's dirty. In year 9 during sex class everyone was putting their condom on their carrot, no one was like, "ew" or anything at all o_o

I don't talk openly about sex, because many of my classmates think it's funny.
I don't think it's funny. It's just privacy. When I tell my classmates one thing, they wanna know the whole story.

That's why I don't tell anyone, except for my own boyfriend and maybe my best friend.

See, on TV, they show you mom's who will openly talk to their daughters and dads who make sure that their son knows what he's doing. In India...it ain't that way. Even in America, with Indian parents. Everything I know about sex, (which really is a lot), I learned from raunchy jokes, TV, the internet, basically the media. Oh, and school.

I mean, India's got the Kama Sutra and all. But sex is deemed an inappropriate topic for anyone who isn't married. O_o

A conversation in a supermarket with my mom when I was five.

Me: I want these new candy!
Mom: Er... Its not candy, dear.
Me: How can it not be candy, it has little fruit on the box?
Mom [laughs]: I will tell you later...

-later-

Me: So what was that?
Mom: Condoms...
Me: Oh.....I see.

I pretty much knew what condoms were when I was five.

Personally, I feel strongly that parents should discuss sexuality with their children. Human sexuality is a natural, beautiful form of expression and if discussed openly gives you the peace of mind as a parent that you know they will not be misinformed by their peers. My husband and I do not believe in censoring our children and have always treated them as young adults. Cultural reluctance to educate young people about human sexuality and cultural reaction of shame and punishment for young people's experimentation and access to information through the prolific pornography industry is an intrinsically related combination which fosters unhealthy cultural human sexuality. Unhealthy in the sense that shame and ignorance become barriers to people's healthy and safe concepts and practice of sexuality. A culture which will not educate itself about sex in order to "protect" itself is left (on many levels) ironically unprotected.

You spell it 'parent'.

My old class was really immature but we got through the talks just fine. No one blushed in Romeo and Juliet, and in PE, we just shut up and listened.

In my household... sex is openly discussed if anybody has any questions. Thats how I was raised.. its just always been that way.

I myself am a very open person.

Sophemore year in bio class we had to do a bit on sex ed.

It was great! HAHAH! We all joked some... but we had serious moments too. There was a meeting (with a couple of classes invited) with a planned parenthood person.. (a young girl.. mid twenties..).. to talk about STD's.

It was an open discussion. the students partispated and asked questions.

I find it all fascinating.

I think that's very very well put.
