We're studying the Civil War and I kinda wrote this about a film we watched- "Glory". So I called this poem Glory. I tried to make it so it could apply to the war today too. Hope you like it.

When Johnny comes marching home again
They'll all be in for a surprise
'Cause all that tells of the battles he saw
Is the fear written in his eyes

When Johnny comes marching home again
The skies will fill with grey
'Cause he saw images of battle
That he'll remember to this day

When he sleeps the shots will ring again
When he wakes he'll see the men crying
And he'll envy the flag he's fighting for
'Cause that flag cannot fear dying

When Johnny comes marching home again
He won't feel any pain
He left his heart on that dusty field
Where so many died in vain

That was good. I like Civil War history and I actually wrote a poem going from the beginning of the war to the end a couple of years ago, but it wasn't very good. Anywho, yea you really captured the mood of that war and the current one. I esp. like the line about leaving his heart on the field. What a great metaphor. Oh and did you name him Johnny because of Johnny Reb and Billy Yank or did you just choose that name?

"When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" is an old war song about how the soldiers will be so happy and how much everyone will celebrate them when they come home after winning the war, so I just took that line and put a twist on it.
