It's about his girlfriend and how is is trying to be adult and level headed about her leaving, but can't quite manage it - that's where the 'time of your life' comes from and also the 'good riddance'. I suppose people don't get why it's played as a good-time song like at graduations and weddings and stuff when really it's meaning is supposed to be sarcastic and bitter.
Or at least, that's what i get from it, anyhow

Until i watched that youtube video i always thought if it as a mellow goodbye to the earlier more melodic Green Day, welcoming the new warning/american idiot Green Day as social issues became more important they evolved into a more political more darker Green Day.
Because it's the final track on Nimrod and all.
But i spose they couldn't have planned a change.
Or did they?

when i heard this song, it mad eme think of love. cheesey, i know, but that is what it reminds me of. "its something unpredictable, but in the end its right, i hope you have the time of your life" love is unpredictable, but in the end, it's always right.
