I watched with morbid fascination at the consequence of my doing,
the incriminating can in my hand.
It paused for a minute, skidding in the wetness of the floor,
desolate desperation as its senses scatter.
Green belly side up.
Legs flail in the air, a warrior with some strength left.
It fights to upturn itself, to regain its once weightless dignity and freedom.
Its emerald underside mesmerizes, like the brightest of gems.
There was poetic signaling in its pointing feelers,
as though sending out a feeble SOS, while the vigor in the flailing limbs
meanders and weakens.
I imagined that it was saying a final goodbye, to whomever might miss it.
Perhaps I, murderer that I was, felt an obligation to see it off.
I dignified it with attention, with unwavering focus,
watching its every move, its every struggle,
its last breath. Everything else shrunk in comparison to the
mammoth of an effort taking place right there on my
bedroom floor.
The warrior succumbed to its malady. I bade it adieu with
tissues and a dustpan.
And I, murderer that I was, put the incriminating can away.
Far away,
at the very back of the
broom closet.
