Glass Raindrops

Glass raindrops fall from asphalt skies
into my head, turning my thoughts to ice again.
I’m realizing everything around me is a painting
by an artist I’ve yet to idolize.

I’m not gonna let you take me away again
I’ll stay out here in the cold
You’ve taken me away for way too long.
Out here my words are muffled,
in the concrete air around me,
they fall to the ground like my ideal cardboard cuttouts.
Yet, I’ve never felt so free.

Tiny snow angels appear on my windowsill
I burn my feet, walking in the summer snow
As wolves bay, I’ll hang off this fire escape,
overlooking our fair city
My eyes shining in the invisible street lamps

The suns that rise are still a surprise, to me.
It makes it seem as if the world is still turning.
I keep living life on the edge
of a quarter
soon to be shoved into a parking meter.

The silicon trees wave in the breeze
and whine as the wind yells for them to
“Get a job!” or
“Find a nice Catholic girl to marry!”
Their leaves fall as the seasons change
From their 3rd birthday,
To the day they simply wither away.

My crayons drop to the floor
I’m not the one who colors the world anymore.
There’s no need to color my skin a pearly white,
It’s already that way for tonight,
Tomorrow, boy, Will my face be red!

Yes, Perhaps I’ll never know what freedom is
If what I’ve seen has ever been real
If I’ll ever grasp the caverns of my imagination,
But, if I can reach out and touch
The glass raindrops,
That’s real enough for me.
That’s real enough for me.
