Ok
For those of you who don't know what straight edge is, it means that you are making a personal ban on drinking and drugs for your whole life. Straight edge people usually mark it by drawing black Xs on their hands with Sharpies.
It was started by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat
Do you think that it's ridiculous to pledge something for the rest of your life or do you think that it is possible to follow this?
I personally don't consume anything and I used to listen to straight edge bands, but I have never ~declared~ myself as straight edge. I think its a personal decision and I don't see anything bad in it.
i dont see the point in "declaring" staight edge, igfyou choose not to consume anything thats cool..it's your choice but to go around proclaiming it and stuff...idk not my thing.
I'm also far from being straight edge too so maybe thats why....
Can you have a half straight edge. For example, you're okay with drinking, but not okay with doing drugs???
I'm thinking of a reply, i just wanna know this first....
That's not being straight edge then xD
I don't think it's something that you can be "half of".
Like, you can be part hardcore. You either are, or you're not.
I have never drank, smoked or done drugs and I never will, but I don't know if I'd go around shoving that into everyone's faces. I get weird looks in school as it is!
I think it's kinda the same thing with vegitarianism/veganism.
Like, I don't mind when people talk to me about it, but I can't stand it when they shove it down my throats 24/7.
I'm planning on being straight edge just because there's a bad history of drugs/alchohol in my family..and..well...yeah e.e
For personal reasons.
I'm straight edge, but only because I'm not old enough to drink yet and doing drugs is stupid. But I will drink when I'm enough. I don't plan on getting wasted EVER. So, I guess I'm not exactly "straight edge."
But I think showing that you're straight edge is cool. It's kind of like showing what your religion is by wearing a cross around your neck.
I used to think of myself as 'straight edge'.
Then I got sick of people saying 'woah, you can't do that, you're not 18!', regardless of the fact that the smoking age in England was 16 at the time and underage drinking is a normality anyway. So I've tried smoking and tried drinking out of simple curiosity, and neither really appeals to me. Despite the fact that all of my friends are drinkers and smokers, I just don't like it. At the end of the day, I don't drink or smoke, but I don't regard myself as straight edge anymore.
The drugs one is a different thing, I guess. Let's be plain about this; I probably couldn't live without medication, and certainly not without painkillers. I have a long-term medical condition and not taking drugs is hardly an option for me. Although it all depends on what you class as drugs - but why is a person addicted to co-codamol worse than someone addicted to crack?
I think it's a great because it makes not doing drugs and drinking a cool thing. With peer pressure higher than ever these days, I think its really great.
I guess I'm a straight edge... I mean, I'm strongly against drugs and alcohol, but if others want to do it- more power to them. I hang out with plenty of people who show up high or drunk to school anyway.
But I'd also like to point out that it's not just straight edge people who think they're all "hxc" for not drinking or doing drugs. It's also people who use who like to shove it in your face that they're "very cool" for drinking or using. Either way- it's pretty dumb to think that of yourself, but I just wanted to point that out.
I'm straightedge, through and through. I've never touched alcohol or drugs, mostly because I see what they've done to some of my closest friends, and I never want to wind up dependant on a substance. Ever.
However, I very rarely talk about it, or brag. I don't judge people, I just want the ones I love to be careful and as safe as can be. I would never presume to tell anyone how to live their life, and it really bothers me when other sxe people act all righteous and haughty.
straight edge? its a personal choice like you all pointed out. I dont really feel like being sXe is totaly for me, seeing as i dont "smoke", only seldomly with friends and i dont drink all that much, but i dont resent the two... so yeah... but, whatever makes you happy, go for it, grab it and make it your own.
Well, I see nothing wrong with drinking at a legal age, as long as its responsible. Other than that, I'm thinking I'll be pretty close to "straight edge".
It is a personal decision, it's all a matter of what each individual sees as being an appropriate or inappropriate way of conducting themselves. If people want to smoke... you know what, it's their body. I personally would never touch a cigarette, but it's their choice. Same with drinking. I'm not going to preach to someone what they should and shouldn't do. It's all a matter of what kind of standards you set for yourself.
Really, I'm not for banning something that you've never tried before, but this is a complete exception.
I think it's a very motivational decision. If you were to go to a party and be offered drugs and booze at what seems to be the best time, you look down at your hand and remember the promise you made to yourself.
I think it also helps self-discipline. Once you get used to being 'straight-edge' you won't have to look down at that 'X' on your hand. It'll come naturally to say no to drugs and alcohol.
I don't see anything wrong with being straight edge. Its the persons choice. If they want to be then whatever. I just dont appreciate it when People who are straight edge lecture me. I choose to do drugs. Ive done drugs since thirteen. So many drugs that the list will drag on awhile. From perscrption to street. I know most people find it stupid, and ect. However to some people its a method of feeling better so they dont kill themselves or go nuts.
