Wake up and smell the caffeine, my dearest procrastinator.
Neurotic dreamers never stay young forever when truths
penetrate the fractures in consciousness that dreams can't fill.
I'm ten paces from where I need to be and make no sign
of marring foreign ground with my footprints when comfort
was that beaten shoe moulded to the contours of my foot.
Undergraduate epidural. These growing pains feel like birth.
The recreation of someone who will never fit in this skin;
a cocoon-covering under which pixie dreams thrive on innocence,
Neverland's exist under pseudonames amongst dust-wrung highways,
encyclopedia framed tracks to intelligence in degree terminology.
An inevitable harvest tars the horizon with foreboding realities.
I read a book of maxims to lodge the time between then
and now with philosophical quotations I can throw to expectation
like tidbits of sugared treats. Bait for ignorance. I can recall
the pulsing palpitation when I scribed one into my doubt.
"You cannot be smart and have a pure heart."
The beauty of existence is obscured into clarity with bifocal lenses.
And yet the future awaits my tread, unavoidable yarns of
time at my feet. I can knit a lifestyle that I'll grow to accept
in future patience or a fabrication that I'm managing despite
the wails of the five-year-old in my heart as they're shown
the skyscrapers piercing the clouds with corporate intentions.
Conflicts of age. No one said growing up was easy
but they also failed to mention that it was this hard. |
