She always wanted to be known as an illusionist, beading
disconnected sentences together like daisy chains that
she'd wear draped around her ankle for artistic flare.
It's sixties' psychedelia with a modern twist she's adopted,
gypsy footprints carved delicately into suburban snowdrifts.
"The world can't understand your subliminal readings, honey."
Well, that's fine because you never understood them anyway.
People-watching made you dizzy with their insensibilities
and twined, kaleidoscopic visions of glamour and vanity.
There's more to life than their foundation-glazed misconceptions
and there's more to yours that trying to make them understand.
"They're not listening to your reasoning anyway, sweetheart."
Wasn't there a time when you knew who you wanted to be?
Daydreaming on roundabouts with a racing mind to match the pace
of the air skimming your naiveté back into your subconscious.
Philosophical conversations scrawled on afternoon cloud-canvases
with like-minded innocents were the moments worth crying for.
I bet you miss them now your mind's sealed between the bedsheets,
with faded patches on your jeans from the times you fell on your knees
trying to apologise, attempting to compromise with time and fate.
The only time you whispered, "I love you" was when you begged him to stay.
The smile on your face is fake but it shines with the flash on.
They never should have convinced you that you'd make it to eternity
because now you're just questioning their worth as adamant liars
and your status as a realist when you buy every dream they breathe.
Morphing into such a drama queen that Hollywood would be jealous.
The paparazzi keep putting so many words in your mouth that you could
choke on them in a strained effort to release soundbites of truth.
Blacking out every mirror so you don't see the lies on your lips anymore.
"Sorry, darling. I was a light year away then, exploring my own world."
And I'm the only one that knows that you never wanted to come back home. |
