Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 3243 | August 25th, 2005 at 02:02pm On Friday, the NCAA passed another in the list of these pointless rules, which bans the use or display of Native American-related names or logos at any NCAA championship-sponsored events. In other words any Indians, Seminoles or Choctaws will be forced to find new uniforms for about 88 events starting on Feb. 1, 2006.
Not only do the universities have to find a way to cover the logos on athletes' uniforms at those events, but any cheerleaders, dance teams, band members or those oh-so-lovable mascots have to be concealed or changed as well. The names in no way perpetuate unfavorable associations with these groups, but actually conjure up very positive associations with a team the fans love. Perhaps Shakespeare said it best when he asked, "What's in a name?"
****************
I think it’s a load of shit. I would think that the teams do it more out of respect and don't mean anything ignorant about it.
But what do you all think about it?
You can read more on it here:

ditto....
anywho, i think that it's lame that our laws can be changed on the whim of a few people deciding to be offended by something as simple as a name when the name has been used for decades...our government is feeble. anytime someone decides to be offended by something these days the law is changed lickety-split to make them happy, and the rest of us have to abide by it no matter how pointless it is.
*sighs* everyone's a victim these days....*shakes her head*
I remember listening to talk radio last year around Christmas time and someone was arguing the point that City Hall shouldn't be displaying a Christmas Tree. They were arguing that it was offensive to people who uphold other religions....
it's a damn tree people, i mean, come on!!! |

Age: 35 Gender: Male Posts: 466 | July 18th, 2006 at 08:01pm I see what they're saying...to some extent. F'rinstance, the Redskins. This obviously has nothing to do with NCAA, but that's just rude. "Redskin" was used in the same context as "savages." So that's nasty. The Braves are a step in right direction, I guess.
But to outlaw Indian names and such altogether is just weird. How bout they outlaw derogatory terms for team names? I think the "Medicine Men" is a good name for a team. Or a band. I'm poart cherokee, so I might be biased, but i dunno... |
