Rest your mind against my pillow one more time for old lies' sake.
You know it's already been reformed with your imprint and that
this single bed was always destined to cradle two hearts beneath its sheets.
Pre-planned dreams bead the fabric. Choose the one you want to unstitch
because you've already unsewn my inhibitions to trust and now
I'm trusting that you'll lay your world-worn head beside mine.
Shadows winding around my ankles always laced my rationality
with fear in teenage paranoia of what I can't discern and
hiding beneath bedsheets only strengthened their power.
But I know with your sleep-drugged form breathing illusions beside
me that I'll make it through one more lonely-parted night.
Hold my hand between the covers, stitch my heart with smiles.
It's got too many ripped seams to hold in all the punctured dreams
that had died but lived within me in my insistence to hold
on to those frozen embers, placing phoenix wishes on them.
Pulses in twilight and entwined fingers for consolation and I'm
fading into sleep, shading in my dreams. You've got me now.
How many fools have you touched this way to make them gold?
The sleep in my eyes burns with silver. I was always second best
and I know there are warmer beds in this open-ended city that
scatter rose petal invitations across their satin sheets to entice you.
Can you hear them? Because I'm fearing them stronger tonight.
Don't let them take you home, my darling, while the moon still shines.
My moth-eaten blankets don't offer much protection against the world
but I'm a poetic pauper with a purpose and I'm staking my dreams on you. |
