Drunken bars and empty cars are ours to claim tonight with
the lips and the lovers, the strobe lights and the stars.
It's yet another taxi ride to nowhere with you by my side,
our palms pressed to the window to catch the city flashing by.
And we're out of tune with the radio but singing along anyway,
re-defining "teenage kicks" with our antics, voided inhibitions
and the beauty of every breath we gasp between broken laughs.
This time we're crying from the joy of it all, not the misery.
Not staying up late to greet tomorrow just to savour today
with its rain-streaked pavements and every dimmed closed sign.
Playing those caged birds finally freed from gripping iron bars
by weaving our daisy chains of laughter around the horizon.
I've never been so high without leaving ground level before:
feet to the concrete but my mind is with the stars right now.
Tonight, there's nothing here but me, you and this feeling
like nothing but this city is going to cascade into ruins.
So light your best smile, darling, and let's go out in style
as we push the peddle just beyond where we're pushing our luck. |
