I depends on how much you want to learn. Get a guitar, and find someone you know who plays. They can show you basic stuff to get you going, plus it helps to have somone who is showing you instead of a book or website.

Read a chord chart... Do you know how to read a chord chart?

Picture of a Chord Chart (You can get them as giant posters.. I had one for sometime.. and still do..)

The lines that are going vertically represent the strings... the low E (the line on the very very left)should be closest to your face.. and the line on the very very right.. represents the High E.. that should be closest to your leg... The dots.. thats where yuo put yuor fingers to form each chord

1- Index finger
2- middle finger
3- Ring finger
4- Pinky.

The strings marked with an X above.. will not be strummed with the pick or fingers when you play.. all the strings marked with a O.. or nothing.. WILL be strummed with the pick or fingers.

Practice playing classical chords over and over and over again.. do quick changes between the chords... One of the easiest chords to play.. is the E minor chord (the "minor" is often replaced with an M.. EM)... and one of the most difficult chords to play.. generally an acomplishment for most guitar players to master.. is the F major (when a chord is a "major" chord.. the major is ussually just dropped off.. it's just "F"Wink.

That's a good way to learn classical guitar chords.. Thats how I learned them...

Tabs generally the same way.. only on a Tab.. the strings will be shown horizontally.. High E beign the very top line.. low E being the very bottom line.

****************

As for what "Tre's Wife" said. it does help to have someone show you how to do things... but if you can't... Well.. OH WELL.

****************

Most rock bands play Bar or Power chords.. power chords are extremely easy to learn.... for bar chords.. you have to have a verrrry strong index finger (which I do not have... I have tiny hands..)... but they aren't ussually difficult to learn. For now.. I won't go into the details of Bar and Power chords... Classic chords are a good place to start..

***************

Any questions.. LET ME KNOW!

It's not hard to teach yourself..
I actually prefer learning yourself. Lessons piss me off. (Though I've never had them
My friend had lessons and learned the dumbest things.
Like how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb. (Exept.. not that song. Something like that
I think that's dumb. xD

I just kinda played around with my guitar for a year. THEN I finally learned tabs. ..O.o

The point of playing songs like marry had a little lamb, twinkle little star.. is just to learn how to read sheet music and follow notes.\

But yeah, it can seem pointless.

Practice. It doesn't matter if you sound crappy, you'll get better eventually. If you're not patient you're really not fit to play an instrument. Practice chords and scales and stuff like that. My dad taught me a few chords, which you could easily find on the internet, and he let me go from there. After two years I can play every Green Day song there is. Don't give up! Even if your fingers bleed!

yeah don't give up ppl Wink

I dont' remember who it was.. I think it was Albert Hammond Jr. of the strokes.. when he was first learning guitar.. he played until the skin on his fingers were nearly worn off... He put super glue onto his fingers.. stuck it to his arm.. and tore his hand off of his arm.. leaving skin on his fingers where he put the glue.. FROM THE ARM!

It's probably someone else.. and I have the name "Albert" stuck in my head.

Either way.. what a great story Smile.

She didn't learn sheet music or even tabs. >_< Just where to place your fingers on frets and whatnot.
Maybe she just had a bad teacher... O_O

It may be good to start off with some lessons.

But if you can't, then I would learn from somebody who already plays guitar and can teach you the basics. Then you will grow more on that as you keep playing and practicing and learning new songs.

I recommend starting off with some Green Day songs. Up

well...*scrates head* when i started to learn how to play the guitar i first bought one....anyhow i basically just needed someone to teach me the basic basics....such as holding the guitar right and what the string numbers are and watnot...then i just took out a song that i really wanted to learn how to play....for begginers i would suggest: dust in the wind. that song is good for fingerpicking.....stairway to heaven is a bit of everything so you can learn things from sliding to hammer on and...ya
