Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | As most people know, there are three basic sciences; biology, physics, and chemistry. Which on is the fundemental science whose laws and rules are what life, the universe, the Earth, and other things are based on? I believe it is physics because the only thing that chemisrty is about is electrons really, and biology only has to do with any living object and nothing to do with simple matter. Physics is just so logical and simple which is why it is so beautiful and I believe it to be the fundemental science. |

We are biology, our pets are biology, our food is biology, the trees and grass, every living thing is biology. The science of life. But biology operates on the principles of chemistry. We are kept alive by the chemical reactions that happen in our body. Photosynthesis, the most basic and most necessary life process, is nothing but a chemical reaction. The most simple and basic object of chemistry is an atom. An atom works on the principles of physics. An electron rotates around the nucleus due to a balance in centripetal and centrifugal force. The atom is kept together by the nucleus gravity of the nucleus, where most of the mass is. Everything comes back down to physics. Our solar system was formed out of a collapsed nebula. There was a balance between the attraction and repulsion of particles in the nebula. Once this was disturbed, the nebula collapsed in on intself and dust and gas swirled around each other. This goes back to the laws of physics. So really, we wouldn't be here if not for physics. |

Matt Smith Admin ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 31134 ![]() ![]() | "Physics is the ONLY science"- My physics teacher. I kind of see where he's coming from. My old science teacher, back when I was still studying combined science, once said that physics is the root sience, upon which chemistory is built, since all chemistry is the science of matter and is built upon the atom, and biology is built on top of chemistry and is the study of living organisms. I think so. I don't think physics is simple or easy or anything, but in all honesty, I think that physics is the deepest and most 'real' of all the sciences. Of course it isn't simple. Physics is the most complete amount of knowledge we have as to how the universe works, and if anything, bio and chem are much more simple, because they deal with things that are not of the same scale as physics. Basically, once you go past quantum mechanics, there isn't much at all, thats the limit of our knowledge. I think Chemistry is by far the most useful to our society in a commercial sense, and Biology is the most important in a natural sense, but when you look up at the stars or below the surface of the earth, right to the boundaries of thought and time...thats Physics. |
lyrical_mess Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 5278 ![]() ![]() | Joan Greenwood: I've actually thought about that possibility. A lot. ![]() But it still comes back to physics. Because the atom still operates on physics. and the cell still operates on molecules which are bonded atoms. |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | I think physics is just so logical it is easy. It is beautifully simplified yet one of the most vibrant of all subjects I study. Everyone told me that Higher Physics would be difficult...I don't think so. I think learning physics also prepares people for everything else in the world. It is an amazingly philosophical subject which is one of the reasons I enjoy it a lot. Also, it can be related to anything, which is why I believe it is the fundemental science. |
The Doctor Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 8786 ![]() ![]() | Anji:I'm taking Higher Physics ![]() anddd doing my degree next year ![]() There's only one aspect of Physics I dislike and that's forces. Not that I have anything against them or wish that they were no more ('cause that's not crackpot, that's insane. As my Chemistry teacher says: (and I quote) Chemistry is to do with the little blue, fuzzy, negative things what go round a nucleus. Physics is just to do with the lump in the middle and how everything works. Biology...actually Biology is a bad word in his class ![]() We had to write those above as the definitions of the basic sciences. 'Cept the Biology one cause I paraphrased it. Yeah... |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | In my opinion, all chemistry is about is electrons and the periodic table. Once you understand them, then you get all of chemistry. |

GD Addicts Anonymous Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 5896 | I'm not so much into science because I'm a Christian... I mean, science is alright, but I definitely don't believe in certain aspects of it, like evolution. I do believe in cells, but I believe God is what rules the universe, not science. But out of the three sciences you listed, I would have to say biology is the most fundamental. |
lyrical_mess Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 5278 ![]() ![]() | Even if you're looking at it from a religious perspective, I'd say physics. As in: Thank God for physics! O_o. No, like, when God created the Earth, he set certain rules as to what his creations can and cannot physically do. Because otherwise we'd all already be dead. So these rules come to us as Newton's laws, forces, etc. One might even say that the forces (gravity, etc) are God using his power directly. |
Kurtni Admin ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 34289 ![]() ![]() | Anji: ![]() I don't get how you can say one science is more important than the other, when they are all about totally different things. That's like asking which group of foods is more important, when you need nutrition from them all. They all serve very different purposes that are valuable in their own way. Different laws and rules of the universe are based on all three. If you look at how physics, or any science has changed over the years, different theories that have been changed, who is to say that we won't have totally changed all the laws 1000 years from now, and what we believe to be the fundemental laws, are just a bunch of conicidences that happened to work then, that are really false. I think gravity is a lame word, seriously, within the next 1000 years they need to prove it's not real, or it's something else, Im sick of it. ![]() |
lyrical_mess Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 5278 ![]() ![]() | Prove that gravity isn't real? As cool as that'd be...it would be weird to have nothing holding you down. *floats around* But I've been thinking and chemistry is pretty important to humans. Because we cook food. Chemistry plays such a huge rule in nutrition and cooking. |
sugar city urchin. Geek ![]() Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 209 | i hate physics. but i see what you mean. i think rather than just one, it's a combination of all. or maybe just physics and biology. but also rather than those sciences, psychology could be another fundemental aspect. |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | Kurtni:They are simple, simple basics which are the building blocks to everything complicated. The idea is that there is one science that is, not more important, but serves as the structure for every single thing in existance. Like biology doesn't apply to non-living matter so it is not a fundemental. |
