timing is important..co-ordination is another and once you have gotten the hang of playing, make sure u use alot of cymbals coz they really add charachter to the music..green day 4 example, tre uses heaps of cymbals and well, their music speaks 4 itself Very Happy

well, i think you'd have to have good ears. because the nest way of learning is listening to it. there are also some excersise things that i read in a book that you can do.

like... take some pencils, ones that are long and arent sharpened or anything, and play on pads, and try to match the beats, and learn how to get coordinated and grow your speed. Stuff like that.

It really depends though, if yuo are a quick learner, and catch onto things easily, then it shouldnt be too hard.

i give drum lessons, a good book to start with is Joel rothmans mini-book of monster drumming, start off slow, its fun to play fast but slow builds skill, fast builds memory, i taught myself how to play and i thought that was more fun than lessons would be,i give lessons to these to kids who have no idea what they r doing, lol

How long did it take til you got any 'good' ?

First of all, lessons are really a must. like when i started playing i couldnt even read drum sheet music or count time, so you really need lessons. Also dont rely completely on the metrinome, coz that will fuck you up later on, i mean its ok when you're starting out, but if you're ever goona play in a show like you cant be using that! but good luck!

You don't need to take lessons to learn an instrument. Anybody can teach themselves their own way. Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) taught himself the drums and he plays differently than other drummers and look how famous he is for his drumming.

wrap your drum sticks in electric tape so they dont slip out of your hands as easy.

I think drumming consists of a couple of things....
If you are teaching yourself, you need to ask around other drummers on how to hold the stick properly. This is important when you playing different grooves, funk, jaz, rock...anything....

umm.....the rudiment....paradiddle: right left right right leftright left left
five stroke roll: right right left left right left left right right left or you can press roll it...if your really lazy and sucky...
doublers: left left right right

theres soooo many more. But these, I feel, are some of the most important to learn for starters. AND THE GRIP!!! LEARN TO HOLD THE STICK THE RIGHT WAY!!!

good luck!!!
