What enigmatic appeal, a charismatic
catastrophe; such cordial decay,
such glamorous deceit, such a B-movie
blusterpiece wearing pride in a buttonhole.
There's not a theory you didn't scribe, a
masterpiece you never created: the gurgle
of a politician, the tears of a whore;
they all fall from the red-rimmed
hands that you never wipe clean.

And you tell me that you saw the fall
of Rome reflected in your morning coffee.
Well, my visionary, did you laugh at their
ignorance, draw sketches of their demise in
sugar whilst writing requiems for them?
Tell me, do you dream the delicate demise of
success? Or do you feel your sleep leak with
proverbial tears and blood-choked screams? Does
the masquerade fade into mausoleums and misery?

See, you keep working corpses to dust, my muse,
stirring a spoonful of bitterness into your mug
to perfect the taste. Don't you understand, sweet
insensitivity, that the cliques will thank you for
this season's fashion statement but the underworld
will curse you for this year's death count?

That was just gorgeous, I absolutely love your Rome image. Damn it, this one really blew me away. I don't have an awful lot to criticise, to be honest. Very Happy And I've been noticing recently how you've managed to keep the long titleitus under control, and the sentence stretchability to a minimum. Fantastic improvements to poetry that was already pretty damn beautiful.

Thank you so much, honey. I guess that break from writing did me a lot of good.
