Holden

Take a step inside this chapter and get
your feet wet. This type-written life
feels better against eyelids than
that dream you had the morning you woke
to find Life on the mattress beside you.
Its anorexic form took up the bed and blankets
with skin grey around the smile. And you
were left shivering against consciousness
in time to the alarm clock, never seeing
yourself in those wrinkles, the deep-pitted
lines and word-heavy indentations.

He was your one-night stand from a binge
on philosophy, arriving the hour after
your lips became chapped from drinking
questions; a lifetime too late, an
eternity early. You weren't moulded
to kiss the intangible; a figment of
an imagination (Him; the firstlast hobo
with a ticket in his mind. The One with
soul-eyes like galaxies, where every star
shone in doubt and comets trailed inspiration)
- but you pursed hope anyway and met
sugar-paper pages halfway. Reaching through
the paragraphs and psychosis, you touched
the boy dressed in words under plot-light.
He rippled like regrets beneath you,
leaving a taste of tears on your skin as
he wore a reflection of you in his sighs.
You gave him your stone-based heart and
he gave you his story in paper-back form.

Now you wake with New York's best seller as
last night's love affair beneath your pillow
and you tell them it's true because, if
wishes are real under moonlight, then
fiction exists when pages lie open.

Seeing as how The Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book, I get skeptical sometimes when people write poetry based around Holden or anything else to do with The Catcher in the Rye, but you- you shot past all doubts and arrived at a great poem.
