Ok. I know these are all over the internet, but there are so many for each song for a newbie it can get confusing picking which version to learn, so here is my proposal.

GSB has a tab section, with tabs tested by the GSB community. So GSB can be a definitive resource.

Now, to make my proposal interesting. I'll do the transcriptions for guitar and bass. If you want me to, I'll start with popular songs and then fill in the back catalogue piece by piece. I'm a very experienced musician, and it would be quite easy for me.

What do you dude/dudettes think?

edit - I'll also write little articles explaining how to play tricky sections, and hints on how to make everything sound good.

Quick update. American Idiot is done, finished it last night, and I honestly reckon it's better than any of the tabs on the internet I just compared it to.

Not got a guitar with me at the moment, and lots of work to do when I get home, so will be no more progress til Sunday at the earliest.

i like it, i'm not very good at transcribing, but ive got loads of songs that my teachers taught me, some pretty complex that i can get onto here somehow, not any green day im afraid though. How about a sort of "tabs and lessons" forum, so people new to instruments can read threads on basics and stuff, or would that just go under the musicians forum?

The tab idea is good though, but what about those laws about tabs that forced all the tab sites to close down, wouldnt that put GSB at some liability?

What about sheet music? Can we have a sheet music thingy too? Because me and a lot of other people don't like reading tabs and want sheet music for guitar and piano.

Can it be like everyone who has sheet music can upload it onto the site? And if a million people send in Good Riddance, then people can choose which version they want. Because some books are better than others. There could be categories like guitar, piano, flute, strings, etc.

Well, copying it off books isn't legal. If someone transcribes it, maybe...

still most tab sites i can think of, UG maybe being the exception, have been closed down for having transcriptions of guitar tabs on their sites, even though it might not be the official tab.

but aint most of those online tabs classed as the posters work as they interpret the tabs and tab it themself... so therefore it is classes no longer as the artists tabs and not under any copyright law...

i could be wrong but i think thats how tab sites get away with it...

It is under a copyright law, though, that's what that whole excerpt was.
The poster's interpretation is still "derived work" because it's based on "pre-existing work". And from my understanding, only the copyright owner has the right to do/authorize that.

Unfortunately, a lot of tab sites don't get away with it. D:

[edit]§ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use38

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

--

This would count as teaching, wouldn't it?
Since tabs are non-profit and for educational purposes, are usually only small parts of the whole song (usually a single instrument), and don't affect the potential market... tab sites shouldn't be taken down... D:
