So, I'm sure many here are aware of what was supposed to be the impending doomsday that is the start of CERN's Large Hadron Collider running at full capacity. Well, were still here. I think it's an interesting topic, especially as it just shows how intense human curiosty is, that we'd risk possible annhiliation to create a machine that may or may not tell us someting which we may or may not even understand. Infact, the physicists don't even know what they are looking for technically. They do not know how the reslts will present themselves, I mean. So, is it a good use of money? Will it all end tragically with the creation of black holes that will suck the Earth into oblivion? What do you believe they will find? Do you believe in the Higgs boson? Discuss. Also, a few more tidbits of information, the first one is actually quite sad, in a really pathetic way. A girl in New Dehli who truely believed that the world was going toend on Wednesday commited suicide, on Tuesday. Just thought that that was so unfortunate. Especially because she was almost a month early. To clarify to those who may have been skeptical of a mass annhiliation, and are now pompously boasting that we are still alive, nothing much happened in terms of danger on Wednesday, the 10th, because all they did was fired some particles to see how the machine would work and observe the results they were getting. They are currently calibrating the machine for the actual collision experiment which will occur in roughly 27 days should everything go according to plan. Of the Higgs boson, or 'God particle', Stephen Hawking has bet $100 that it wouldn't be found and that we need to find a new theory, which sucks for me, because I was taught of the Higgs boson at school. I suppose that's one of the disadvantages of learning physics, is that half of it is theory, and half of the theory is wrong. For anyone who is maybe in the dak about all this and doesn't quite understand what is going on, here is a brilliantly informative rap, done by some of the technicians at CERN: |
BREASTS Idiot ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 973 | It's freaking scary to think of the things that could happen. And that in a way, we're kind of okay with maybe destroying ourselves. |
Miley Cyrus Basket Case ![]() Age: 32 Gender: Female Posts: 15185 ![]() | i feel like if this were any real danger it'd be the only thing people talked about right now because everyone would be freaking out and news stations would be seriously reporting it and such ![]() but that's so sad about that girl ![]() |

paper shoes This Board Is My Home ![]() Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 34269 | It is ridiculous, when they could be spending all that money to make the world better instead of possibly destroying it. |
paper shoes This Board Is My Home ![]() Age: 34 Gender: Female Posts: 34269 | idk if this is true but if it is then UGH why is anyone allowed to do an expensive experiment that might... I don't know... END THE FKN WORLD? I'm pissed off now. |
tomamazon GSBitch ![]() Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 68084 ![]() ![]() | paper shoes: this omg. if there was even the slightest chance of ending the world, why would you consider doing the experiment? |
Kurtni Admin ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 34289 ![]() ![]() | To the people worried about the world being sucked into a black hole: Do you know what Hawking Radiation is? |
BREASTS Idiot ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 973 | No I don't But I'm sure its going to be something really smart that makes the people that don't know look really stupid ![]() |
BREASTS Idiot ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 973 | Wikipedia: So what if they don't? |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | Black holes are not scientifically proven yet, they are based on pure mathematical principals applied to physics. So through deductive logic, we can only rely on what we know so far, so for all we know we could all be sucked in. Personally, I woudn't be too miffed if just Switzerland fell into oblivion. |
wild at heart Idiot ![]() Age: 29 Gender: Female Posts: 983 ![]() | black holes do not stay in one place, they move continuously, so if there's any chance of black holes being created they will leave our orbit before they get big or anything. It's obvious nothing's gonna happen ffs. Yes i do believe in the humoruosly named particle, people were talking about this for a while now and the results have been done theoretically so everyone pretty much expects what's gonna happen. But i don't really know if it was a good use of money, i mean it would be nice to know how the world was created and all but what's the proof that the world exists? |
Anji Basket Case ![]() Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 15914 ![]() | I think the Large Hadron Collider sheds new light already into the existance of th universe and the beginning of it. I mean, it's quite apparent that 6-8 billion years ago, before the creation of the universe, a previous civilization attemped to collide to particles to simulate a 'Big Bang' which in turn imploded their universe in this 'Big Bang' thus creating or own! Oh the logic! |

PCG Jackass ![]() Age: 29 Gender: Male Posts: 1608 ![]() ![]() | I think it's a stupid idea. They should just leave well enough alone. |
Matt Smith Admin ![]() Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 31134 ![]() ![]() | I'm not worried. I don't see why people are getting so panicky about this. If the world ends, we're not going to know about it. |
I_Eat_Pancakes Falling In Love With The Board ![]() Age: - Gender: - Posts: 5200 | ^ i agree with that. Also i think the problem is just how the media is hyping it up to be a doomsday machine so everyone is hating the experiment rather than accepting what it could potentially bring us. although if i were religious I'd hate it anyway because if it worked... oooh boy. I'm all for the LHC, screw it, we know we're gonna end our world in one way or another so IF we all implode (y) |
NeoSteph Basket Case ![]() Age: 37 Gender: Female Posts: 16494 ![]() ![]() | I like that everybody got panicked when in fact it wasn't even the start of the experiment, meerly just a small test run to make sure it was all working properly so most of the equipments power wasn't actually used. feel free to pillage, panic and scarper now ![]() |
