"All Grown-Up", chapter 1

"This feels like it's going to be a good day!" exclaimed Mary-Alice. She walked along the cracked up pavement of her town. The cool breeze toyed with her long black hair. It was chilly outside and the sky overhead was fading into dark purples and pinks. Mary-Alice's heavy backpack was sliding of her shoulders, wanting to go down to the dirt-filled street.

She got to her house. It was a one-story building with one huge glass window and several little ones. The peachy-pink walls stood out among all the other houses n her street. She collected the mail from its box and shoved the door opened. The lights were off and all you could hear in the house was a faint buzzing coming from the garage.
"What is dad up to now?" She asked under her breath. Her father was a great scientist. He was recognized for his work in physics and new-age technological wonders. Some of these wonders he tried out on Mary-Alice.

Mary-Alice put down her things on the green leather sofa and headed towards the garage. The buzzing grew louder with each step she took towards it. When she got there, blue sparks went flying every direction.
"Dad, I'm home." Mary-Alice announced.
Her dad took off his protective mask and turned off the flamer. He was still wearing his science coat with Daniel embroidered on it. He had black hair which was slowly fading into grey from old age. His eyes were a kind light brown while his smile gave a warm tingly feeling in your spine.
"Hey there Einstein, how was high school?" He greeted with emotion. Mary had a burning sensation to yell at her father for using hat pet name, but instead ignored it.
"Fine dad, it was just great." She answered as she leaned over to hug him.
"That's good to hear." He responded. "Is it still to easy?"
"Yeah, I guess so." She responded. "There's just no challenge."
"I see what you mean." He said. "What if I told you you're to go to college?"
"I'd say when do I start?" She pondered.
"Just as I make some modifications on this here contraption, you'll be college bound my thirteen year old genius." Her dad answered. She smiled with glee.

-Flashback Four years ago-
"Hold still Mary!"
"But Dad I don't want to... "
"No 'buts' Mary, it will be good for you."
"Fine, let's get it over with"
"Okay, stand still. This won't hurt a bit."
"My head hurts Daddy!"
"Are you okay sweetie?"
"Daddy! Help!"
"It's okay sweetie. Everything will be okay now that you're a lot smarter, my little Einstein."

[i]-End of Flash Back-

"Dad, what's for dinner?" Mary asked her Dad.
"Don't know kiddo." Her father answered.
"How about we make this oven pizza?" suggested Mary. She tossed a cardboard box containing a frozen pizza.
"Okay, but that's if you bake it." Her father said.
"Yeah, we don't want to experience what happened last time." She responded with a giggle. Her fathers always seem to burn their food. They've become a common customer to the local Fire Department. She put the frozen block pizza on a pan and then in the oven it went.
She went to the couch and gathered her belongings that were scattered on the tile floor. Then, she made her way to her paradise away-from-paradise. Her room walls were painted a light blue while a navy blue strip made its way around the walls. A normal bed with blue comforters and wooden furnishings were placed in her room. Her favorite part of her room was her ceiling.
Her ceiling was covered with glow-in-the-dark star stickers. Her father had formed the stars into constellations. Every night she went to bed, she would lie down and look at the stars. She always wondered if she should get a moon or other glow-in-the-dark planets to make it seem as if she were 2,000 light-years away.

She dumped her stuff on her bed and extracted from her backpack some homework she had to do. History, Spanish 2, Geometry, Biology, and Language Arts papers flooded the remainder of her bed. How I hate homework so much. She thought. She took out a pencil from her pencil case and started burning lead on her homework.
In a few minutes she was done with three-fourths of her work. The last one-fourth was Geometry, her worst enemy. She was great at math, probably the smartest person in the class, but she hated Geometry more than anything. She sighed and fin shed her Geometry homework in record time.
By that time the pizza was done and she went to the kitchen to fetch it. She put on oven mitts, opened the oven door, and took out a marvelous pizza. The aroma quickly filled her nose and her stomach started gurgling for food. She set it down on the table and put plates down for her and her father.
"Dinner is ready Dad!" She yelled towards the garage where her dad was still working.
"Okay, I'll be out in a moment." Her father screamed over the racket caused by the chainsaw. A few moments past and her dad came in and sat down. They ate and talked about each others day.
"Well, I'm glad to announce that the Tempius Ager is complete!" Dad exclaimed with complete jubilation. Mary-Alice just sat there with a puzzled look on her face. "Come on! I'll show you!" He said as he grabbed her by the arm.
