"Jovs!" shouted Billie Joe, jumping into the lake. "Watch this, babe!"
Jovie laughed. "He is so cute...ain't he Zo?"
Zooey was watching Tre, who was dunking Mike under the water. "Yeah...Are you two back together, or are you just hangin or what? He just called you 'babe.'"
Emily jumped into the water to help Mike. Jovie continued. "You know, we have not had any trouble with The Rats, and I am so happy to be with him, you know, without worrying about the war and all. Do you think the war is going to come to a head soon?"
Zooey nodded. The girls did not talk after that, they just let the night take them in.
Later that evening, after Zooey and Tre, and Mike and Emily, disappeared under the water together, Jovie found herself sitting on the giant rock over the water with Billie Joe.
"Billie Joe?" she asked.
"Yeah?" he said, getting closer to her.
"Do you think we will be friends forever?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Oh really? What makes you so certain?"
Billie Joe smiled down at her, and took her face in his hands and kissed her lips, softly.
"Because I love you and can't live without you."
That was enough for Jovie, who started kissing him back.
It was so late and she was up way past her bedtime, the stars were like a million tiny candles, lighting up the sky, and the moon was full and promising. Maybe tonight would be their night.
"Tre, stop." said Zooey, brushing his hands of her thiegh.
"Why?" he said, smiling at her misheviously.
"Because I'm not ready fo that yet! It's not right yet."
Tre was angry now. "What do you mean it's not right yet? Zooey, you are forever teasing me and leading me on, and now you are telling me it's not right yet? God, you are such a tease."
"Tre," she whispered softly, and pulled his face down to hers and kissed him. "I-
She was interuppted by the thundering of what seemed like a million footsteps headed their way. She looked up to see what it was.
"Oh.....my.....God..." she stuttered. "Jo-Jo-Jo-Jovie!!!"
Jovie ran to see what was the matter. The Rats! They were everywhere now! All around her and Billie Joe, Tre and even Em and Mike, who just came out of the woods together.
"Jovie Ramone," said the Rat, who Jovie knew to be the leader. "I knew I would have you eventually, and look here, is this...Billie Joe Armstrong?"
Jovie knew what she had to do. "No! I don't know who this is! I have never seen him before in my life, I swear!"
Billie Joe looked at her with shock and hurt. "What? Jovie I love you, I thought you loved me..who are these guys? What is going on?"
Jovie looked at Billie Joe and realized he was doomed.
"Look," she said. "Can we reach an understanding?"
The leader of the Rats laughed, and gave the men a signal to fire.
And they did.
"It was arma-fuckin-geddon!" yelled Jovie to Bryce, her leader, and friend. and Rita, his wife, the nurse. "Is he gonna die?"
Rita sighed. "Honey, I don't know whether to make heads or tail so this."
"What about Tre and Mike?"
"They are already taken care of..they won't remeber anything after tonight."
"If you can fix them, I know you can fish Billie!"
Bryce took her aside. "You know what you are going to have to do?"
Jovie nodded and began to cry. She will never forget the screams that belonged to Billie Joe, her darling, her love, as they removed the bullet from his shoulder and knocked him out.
He will live, but will not see his loving Jovie for a very long time.
