At The Park
"So, what do you want to do now?" Billie Joe asked as he and Gill lay down, side by side on the grass.
"Hmm, lets play the cloud game" Gill suggested and the two instantly started to try and find shapes in the clouds as they chatted.
"That one there looks like a bear! So, you looking forward to staring school?" Billie Joe asked Gill."
"Yeah, kindergarten was stupid. This one looks like an ice-cream cone!"
"This one kinda looks like a pointy shoe, what do you think Pinole Valley Elementary will be like then?"
"I dunno, same as Westmount" Gill replied puzzled.
"Westmount? What's that gotta with anything?"
"What's Pinole gotta do with anything?"
Both friends frantically sat up in a panic, staring at each other, awaiting an explanation.
"You are going to Pinole right?" Billie Joe asked, scared as he already knew the answer.
"No, you mean, you aren't going to Westmount?" Gill replied, her eyes filling with tears as she too already knew the answer.
"No" Billie Joe replied, fighting back a lump that was rising in his throat. He couldn't believe that Gill was not going to be with him at school. They both sat there in silence, neither one of them wanting to acknowledge that they would be going their separate ways. Billie Joe looked down at his feet, swallowing hard. Just then a red soccer ball landed in between the both of them. Billie Joe looked up to see a brown haired boy make his way over to him.
"Can I have my ball back?"
Billie Joe picked it up and threw it to him without saying a word.
"Thanks" The boy said as he ran back to where he was playing.
"You have to go to Pinole, I need you to be there with me!" Billie Joe said with a hint of anger in his voice.
"I want to but my dad has already enrolled me there, he'll make me go!"
Anger had taken over from the hurt and disappointment in Billie Joe. He stood up dramatically, his face screwing up as he thought of the words he wanted to say.
"You could at least try! You don't seem that bothered that we won't get to see each other every day!"
"I do care! It's just I know he won't let me" Gill replied, upset at the thought that Billie Joe seemed to think that she didn't care about it.
"You don't, well, see if I care! I don't need you anyways, I was fine before without you and I'll be fine now!" And with those last words Billie Joe stormed off, headed for home. Gill watched as he ran off, too hurt to try and stop him, make him realise that she truly did care. A tear escaped from her eyes and slowly trickled down her cheek. Gill let it as she wondered if this would be the last time she ever saw Billie Joe.
