Billie Joe's First Love, chapter 5

(I know that Billie Joe and Mike didn't meet until they were 10 but I'm changing it to suit so don't complain!)
It was Billie Joe's first day at school and he wasn't looking forward to it. He hadn't spoken to Gill since their argument. It just wasn't the same without her, he really wished that she was going to school with him so he could at least apologise and make up with her, he had been silly to fall out with her and his dad had told him so. His mom was making a fuss about her little baby all grown up. Billie Joe squirmed as she ruffled his hair. He blinked as a flash of light went off in his face, taken aback by the unexpected taking of a photograph.
"Right, come on, we better get a move on, don't want to be late on your first day!" Billie Joe grabbed his school bag and headed to the car with his dad.
"Hello, what's your name?" a woman with a fixed smile and piercing blue eyes asked.
"Billie Joe Armstrong," he replied almost sheepishly.
"I'm your teacher, Ms Glenn, why don't you go and join the other children," she said, her smile not once faltering, staying fixed firmly across her face. Andy hugged his son and watched as he entered the classroom, sitting down at a train set, set up on the classroom floor.
Billie Joe watched uninterested as the train made its way round the track for about the tenth time, he really wished Gill was there with him, he was never bored when he was with her.
"Hey," a voice said and Billie Joe raised his head to see a brown haired boy sit down opposite him. His face looked familiar, and then he remembered, it was the boy from the park.
"You look fed up," he said.
"I am," was his reply.
"Me too. My name's Mike, what's yours?"
"Billie Joe."
The two boys started chatting and found that they both had lots of things in common. Billie Joe was having so much fun that he even forgot about missing Gill. As it was the first day all the kids got to go home at lunch time, which came much sooner than Billie Joe was expecting. He wandered out into the hallway to see his mother waiting. He said goodbye to Mike and headed over towards her.
"Hey sweetie," his mom said, pulling him close into a tight hug, "How was your first day?"
"Ok," he said as he peered down at his feet. He took his mom's hand as they made their way home, chatting as they did so.
"Make any new friends?"
"Yip, his name's Mike."
"Oh yeah, you should ask him to come to dinner."
"Alright."
"And Gill?" his mom said carefully.
"Yeah, maybe," Billie Joe said sadly as he wondered if Gill would want to see him again after they way he had treated her.

That night after a long, exhausting day, Billie Joe fell straight to sleep, feeling a whole lot better about going to school the next day.
