You're My Angel, chapter 1

Adriana had known Billie Joe Armstrong forever... well almost forever.

They had met on the playground at recess when she was seven years old. A bad-mannered little boy came over and pushed her down in the dirt. Billie came to her rescue and decked him in the face. The punch didn't do much damage... but it sure captured her heart.

From that day forward, she somehow always knew he'd always be there for her when she needed him to be. She didn't know how right she was.

When she was fourteen, she had come down with the flu and pneumonia at the same time and had to stay in the hospital. For almost a week she slept and she was pretty much of out it when she was awake. Billie had begged his mother to let him skip out on school for a few days to keep her company when she was awake. His mother protested but finally gave in because she figured he wasn't going to go to class anyway. So, for four long days he hung out in her hospital room to entertain her when she wasn't sleeping.

Just days after her twentieth birthday, her dad was in a freak accident. He had been helping a friend build their house; one morning after it had rained, he somehow slipped and fell from the second story. He landed in an awkward position and broke several cervical and lumbar vertebrae in his back. Billie and the guys had been off touring in another state when it happened. He got there to comfort her as soon as he could... they had to cancel a few shows to be there, but it was worth it to him.

There had been a lot of complications with his injury and during the early morning hours her dad died. She knew she wouldn't have been able to make it through without Billie there with her. He had been down that road before and he knew what it felt like... he had lost his dad, too.

--

Now she was twenty-one and she was about to witness the utmost painful experience of her entire life. It was Billie's wedding day... but it wasn't her he was marrying. As the ceremony began, she found a chair on the front row to watch the nightmare that was about to take place in front of her eyes.

After Billie said 'I do' a few tears started running down her cheeks. He had just promised himself to another woman and that made her heart hurt like hell. She had been mentally wishing that his fiancée had changed her mind but unfortunately she didn't. Tré apparently noticed that she was crying and he looked at her as if he was trying to reassure her that everything would work out like it was supposed to.

At the reception she clutched onto Tré tightly as they danced. He knew how much she loved Billie and how much it hurt her to see him with someone else.

"Everything will be ok... I promise," he whispered in her ear. She found that it was really weird how he could be so mature when he needed to be.

"I should have told him, Tré," she quietly sobbed into his shoulder. "But now it's too late."

"Why didn't you?" he questioned curiously. "I always thought you would."

After a few minutes she pulled Tré outside to her car. She opened the door and grabbed a folded up piece of notebook paper out of her bag and handed it to him.

"Here, read this... " she said looking down uneasily at the asphalt on the parking lot.

Billie,

I am so happy that you have found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I think it's great... I know Jamie will make you happy.

You've always been there for me... for everything. I kind of feel like I'm losing you... or that we won't have the same friendship that we've always had. I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate all the times that you were there for me... especially when you really couldn't be there, but you came anyways.

I also need to tell you something else... something that has been weighing on my heart for a very long time. I have been in love with you for as long as I can remember. I've always wanted to tell you, I just couldn't find the words to say. I know that this isn't the time to do this and I know that it won't change anything. I just wanted you to know.

I love you and I wish you all the happiness in the world.

XOXO
Adriana

"How come you didn't give it to him?" he sighed. "Maybe it would have opened his fucking eyes... "

"He just seemed so happy last night," she sniffled before hugging him. "I didn't want to rain on his parade, that's all... "

--

"Adriana," she heard someone calling her name in the distance. "Earth to Adriana." She suddenly realized that she was staring blankly across the break room.

"Oh, I'm really sorry," she sighed. "I must have been daydreaming or something."

"Yeah," her friend and co-worker, Haley, said. "But you're off the clock now and you need to go home and get some rest."

"Okay," she said indifferently. "I'll see you on Monday night."

Adriana got up and gathered her stuff and sluggishly made her way out to the hospital parking lot. She had finished nursing school a few months before Billie's wedding and she had been working at the hospital close to her house for a while.

On the walk to her car she felt her phone vibrating in my pocket. Shit... who is calling me at this hour? She checked her watch and found that it was two in the morning.

When she answered, she heard Billie's voice on the other end of the line.

"Oh... hey," he said sounding fully awake but a little unusual. "I honestly didn't think you were actually gonna answer." He laughed. "I don't really know why I called."

"I just got off work a few minutes ago," she informed him. "Is everything ok?"

He said that he just couldn't sleep, but she knew him better than that... something else was wrong.

"Billie," she started. "If you need something, tell me... don't just say nothing is wrong because you feel bad for asking because I've been working all night."

"So what is it? Trouble in paradise?" she asked cautiously. There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. "Billie, are you there?"

"Can I... " he sighed. "Can I come over there for a little while? I mean, I know it's fucking late and all... " There was another pause. "I just really need to see you right now."

As Adriana was opening the front door to go in her house, Billie pulled up in her driveway. He turned off his headlights and then sat in his car for a few minutes. When he finally got out he sat on the porch to smoke so she put her stuff down and did the same.

"You look cute in your little pink scrubs," he said as he leaned down to kiss her on the cheek.

"Whatever," she rolled my eyes. "I just worked for thirteen hours... I do not look cute."

"If you say so... " he smiled.

"So, what's up?" she asked trying to figure out why he was sitting on her porch at two-thirty in the morning.

"I don't think I'm happy," he said as he blew a cloud of smoke into the cool night air.

"What? With your cigarette?" She knew what he was talking about but she could sense his tension and was trying to lighten the mood.

"With Jamie," he sighed as he fiddled with his keys. "She's... I don't know... it's like she is trying to fucking change who I am or something. I don't understand why she is doing this now though... we've been married for almost a year and a half... she should have tried to change me before we got married."

"Oh," she said sarcastically. "And you would have changed?"

"I know that I wouldn't have changed, but... " he paused for a moment. "She doesn't like the whole band thing which has been my fucking dream forever... she told me before I left that she didn't like me hanging out with Mike and Tré eith... " She had also said that she didn't like him hanging around Adriana either, but he didn't have the heart to tell her that.

"What?" she said interrupting him mid-sentence. "That is fucking insane."

"I know," he continued. "And on top of all that she's been trying to make me stop smoking, too... this is only the third fucking cigarette I've had all week."

"No wonder you're a mess," she laughed. "And she has obviously never been around nicotine-free Billie."

"I think I am going to divorce her," he said seriously as he looked my face over as if to get her approval.

"Billie," she started. "You are twenty-three years old and you do not need to have my authorization before you do something drastic." It's not like he had asked for her consent when he married the girl.

She honestly just wanted to tell him to leave her because she wasn't good enough for him anyway, but she knew it wasn't her place. For the first time since Billie and Jamie got married, she felt better. It was like everything was finally going to fall into place.

"Hey, what's in the bag?" she asked pointing to the sack on the other side of him.

"Some Ben and Jerry's ice cream for you... and a nice big bottle of vodka for me," he smirked.

After Billie had finished his fourth cigarette, they got up and went in the house. She went to take a shower and change clothes while Billie stretched out across her bed and flipped through the channels.

After her shower, Adriana stood in the doorway of the bathroom and watched Billie. He was watching something that he apparently found incredibly hilarious. When he finally noticed her presence, he flipped off the TV and turned on the lamp beside her bed.

"So... you're really thinking about divorcing your wife?" she asked as she sat down beside him on the bed and brushed her wet hair.

"Yeah... " he sighed. "And don't try to talk me out of it because I can't take it anymore."

She was so tired she could hardly think anymore. She wanted to stay up and talk to Billie and make sure that he did in fact want to divorce Jamie, but she couldn't stop yawning.

"I'll let you go to sleep... do you care if I stay here tonight?" he asked her as she slid under the sheets.

"Go ahead," she told him. "But don't be trying to wake me up early because I worked all night!"

"Ok... I won't," he laughed. "I'll be on the couch... night," he said as he made his way towards her bedroom door.

"No," she said unexpectedly. "I mean... just sleep in here... that couch really sucks... its painfully uncomfortable."

She hoped that her sudden reaction to him sleeping on the couch didn't freak him out any. She figured it didn't though because they had done this many times before... after all, they were just friends.

He didn't seem to be shocked by her reaction because he just said 'alright' and put his keys and cell phone on her nightstand beside the bed. Then he took off his shirt followed by his jeans and crawled under the covers.

What seemed like only minutes later, Adriana was abruptly awakened by a loud clap of thunder. She sat up and rubbed her eyes in confusion. She looked over at the clock and it was only four and then she realized that Billie wasn't lying beside her anymore. She wondered for a minute if he had even been there at all.

She decided she would go get a drink of water then she threw the covers off of her and headed for the kitchen. As she passed the bathroom, she noticed that the light was on and the shower was running. She knocked on the door and then opened it because she figured that Billie wouldn't hear her over the running water.

"Hey," he said sticking his head out of the shower curtain.

"Hey," she replied sleepily. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah, I just woke up and couldn't go back to sleep," he said as he turned off the water. "I tried really hard to go back to sleep... I watched you're ceiling fan spinning for a long time, but that just made me have to fucking throw up," he laughed.

"You've got some real sleeping issues," she smiled. "I'm gonna get me some water and then go back to bed."

"Ok, I'll be back in there in a few minutes," he said as he was getting out of the shower.

"Ok... goodnight... again," she laughed.

"I'm really sorry that I am over here bothering you when you are trying to sleep... and goodnight again to you, too," he said before she shut the door to the bathroom.

Adriana made her way back to her bedroom and climbed in the bed. Billie soon followed and they both fell asleep.
