You're My Angel, chapter 12

Adriana sat in the uncomfortable chair in the corner of Billie's room in the ICU. The only thing keeping her awake was the incessant beating of the monitor that let her know that he was still alive. There had been a car wreck, a really bad one.

The paramedic that arrived on the scene first told the nurse at the nurse's station that he didn't know how he survived the impact. The doctor, who was willing to tell her a little more since Billie was her 'boyfriend' or something, said that the chances of him surviving this incident weren't good and the odds of him waking up were even worse.

She was thinking about everything that had gone on that day and the day before as she stared out at the rain hammering down on the city. She didn't know what she'd do without him, regardless of how much of an asshole he'd been to her. She still loved him and couldn't stand the thought of him not being there.

"They come in threes, you know..." she heard Hayley say as she leaned up against the doorjamb.

"What?" Adriana asked, confused at what her friend was talking about.

"The things that life throws at you..." she said as she came into the room and sat down on the other chair occupying the small room. "I know you had a fight with him and it's not your fault that he had this wreck, okay? Anyhow, the fight with Tré, the fight with Billie, and now Billie's wreck...he's not going to die because life doesn't work that way. At least I hope it doesn't."

"The odds aren't good though," Adriana reminded her, still staring mindlessly out of the window. "I don't know how to deal with this anymore and everything just keeps falling apart."

"I know, sweetie," Hayley said, trying to make her feel better. "Mike and Tré and some other people are in the waiting room if you want to go see any of them. They'd also like to come in here and see Billie for a few minutes."

She went out into the ICU waiting room and it broke her heart to see all the sad faces. She felt like it was her fault, though...she was the one to get up and leave the coffee shop and she shouldn't have done that. She felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders...and really it was because Billie was her world.

Mike tried to console her and she'd let him do what he could. However, she kept her distance from Tré because things weren't exactly better with him. She couldn't trust that he just wasn't trying to make her feel better because that might give him points for later.

She talked to Ollie on the phone later on during the night, trying to explain in English what the doctors had already told her. Doctors always make things sound so complicated and basically all they said about Billie was 'he's probably not going to make it.' She left it sugarcoated for everybody else, though. She could deal with a hysterical mother, but she couldn't deal with a room full of Billie's panic-stricken friends and family.

Since she was the nurse that was supposed to be working in the ER that night, she got to stay in Billie's room even after visiting hours were over. Hayley and another girl took over her shift so that she could dedicate her time to spending her hours, possibly the last ones, with him.

--

Billie's vitals hadn't changed since earlier in the day and there was no signs showing that he would be waking up anytime soon. She was so mad at him for not being careful and even madder at herself for not being careful...this all could have been prevented. She wasn't sure she believed that, though.

She though that maybe there was some greater power up there, pointing and laughing at the huge mess that she found her life turning into. She sure hoped that wasn't the case and that this was only another lesson that she would have to overcome. She also hoped that she would pass if it was just a lesson. She swore she'd never let Billie out of her sight again if he just would wake up.

--

"Billie," Adriana said, stroking his bandaged forehead. "Baby, I'm so sorry. You've got to wake up. I've got so much to tell you. God, please let him wake up."

"I love you so much and I was an idiot. I should never have left you at the coffee shop today and it was the biggest mistake of my entire life. Now you're so...lifeless and I'm scared that the last conversation we had was the last one. I can't go on knowing that I was screaming and yelling awful things at you the last time we talked," she sobbed, hoping that he could somehow hear her.

"Billie, I have to tell you something so important and you have to wake up..." she whispered, pleading with the unresponsive body in front of her.

He had to wake up because it couldn't be possible for everything to turn out so miserable. She had to tell him something that would change his life forever.
