Serendipity Girl, chapter 4
"I need to meet this guy." Lil says when I'm over at her house later that week.
"Well he goes to our school." I say shrugging.
"Oh! We can check my brother's yearbook." She says excitedly as she runs out of her room and into her brothers, she returns moments later with the blue and grey book.
"Here's his grade!" she points out. I look over the photos and see him.
"This is him." I say pointing.
"Oh Joseph Marciano Armstrong." She says amused. "You're right he is a hotty."
"I never said hotty." I mumble, "I said hot."
"Yeah, yeah, same difference." She mutters as she takes a closer look at the picture. "so are we going to your house now?"
"Sure." I say as I flip through one of her magazines.
Half an hour later we find ourselves swimming at my house.
"Bombs Away!" several male voices yell as Joey, Jakob and some other guy run into my backyard in swimming trunks. The three of them jump into the pool.
"That's trespassing, I can call the cops." I say laughing.
"Awe, but I'm too good lookin to call the cops on." Jakob says smugly. I look over at Lil who's overlooking the three guys in awe.
"Oh guys this is my friend Lil. Lil, this is Joey, Jakob and I've never met him before."
"Matthew Nesser." The guy says.
"Sorry, this is my cousin." Joey explains, "He's staying the week while his Dad finishes up judging some skateboarding competition."
"Your Dad judges skateboarding?" Lil asks in a quite flirtatious tone.
"Yeah well he used to be a pro skateboarder, he taught me everything." Matthew says raising his eyebrows, I guess oversized egos ran in the family. Meanwhile Jakob has found his way to the diving board.
"Now everyone lookey here!" Jakob announces. He pretends to crack his neck before out stretching his arms. He ends up hitting the water in one nasty belly flop.
"Argh! Mother fucker!" Jakob yells in pain. Matthew is next to attempt to dive, in his case he actually dived in successfully.
"Alright people." Joey says proudly as he steps up onto the diving board. He dives into the water cleanly, but his swimming trunks are found floating a couple of feet behind him. Jakob who's standing outside of the pool takes the pole with the net at the end and scoops up the bathing suit.
"Lose something?" Jakob asks evilly as a look of utter shock crosses Joey's face, the rest of us burst out laughing.
"Jakob, give them back or I'll..."
"You'll what? Tackle me with your nude behind?" Joey with his hands over his crotch area manages to swim to the ladder. Jakob places his brother's bathing suit nicely on the patio chair before jumping back into the water. Joey casually climbs out of the pool and struts over to the patio chair and pulls on his swimming trunks.
"Oh yeah, playing it cool for the ladies!" Matthew teases.
"Of course." Joey says as he winks at Lil and I jokingly. "And Jakob, I will get you back for that."
"So who's next on the diving board?" Matthew asks.
"Not me." I say as I swim to the ladder to get out, "I had my fill of swimming for today."
"That's cause you don't know how to dive." Lil says as she steps up to the diving board. She dives in perfectly.
"Show off!" I yell as I grab a towel off the lawn chair. Everyone else gets out of the pool too.
"I'm freezing my nuts off." Jakob mutters as he stands there shivering.
"Stop being such a girly man." Matthew says trying to cover up that he's shivering.
"Would you guys like towels?" I ask laughing.
"Yes please." Joey says. I wrap my towel around my waist and head into the house, returning moments later with three towels.
"Thanks." The three guys say in relief as they each grab one.
We eventually find ourselves at the skate park. Joey and Jakob lent Lil and I there old skateboards.
"Can you girls skateboard?" Matthew asks.
"Umm not really no." I say as I watch someone grind past us on a railing.
"Ahh okay." He says nodding.
"You guys go ahead." Lil insists, "We'll watch and attempt to skate in at least a straight line."
"Amen to that." Jakob says as he climbs the side of the ramp.
We watch as the guys skate up and down ramps, grind rails, take jumps and attempt new tricks. Joey and Jakob are pretty good but Matthew could go pro.
"You likes him don't you." I tease as we see Matthew hop a rail.
"What?"
"Matthew." I say rolling my eyes, "You have the hots for him."
"Uhh maybe." Lil says slightly embarrassed.
"I'm pretty sure he likes you too." I say as I let Joey's old skateboard drop to the ground and I put one foot on it. "Let's try this thing." I manage to get a few feet before stumbling, same with Lil. We continue to make fools of ourselves outside the ramp area.
"Need some help?" Someone says from behind me. I turn around to see Joey standing there smirking.
"Yeah, sort of." I say slightly embarrassed.
"First of all, you're stance is wrong." He says, I can tell he's holding in laughs. "Put one foot on the center of the board, then you push yourself along then put your other foot at the very back of your board to sort of steer." I take another attempt at skateboarding and get a little farther then before.
"So how long have you been skateboarding for?" I ask as I continue to attempt this sport.
"Uhh since I was like six or seven, my Uncle Steve started teaching the three of us." Joey says as he analyzes my skating ability, "Loosen up your too tense." he says grabbing my arm and preventing me from falling.
"Sorry, guess I've got too much on my mind." I say casually, that was a lie, I only had one thing on my mind and that is Joseph Armstrong. I look over at Lil who's truly enjoying her private skateboarding tutorial courtesy of one Matthew Nesser. Jakob on the other hand is flirting like there's no tomorrow with a crowd of girls around his age at the other end of the fenced in skate park.
"Umm Anna." Joey says awkwardly as he scratches the back of his neck, "Would you like to. . . . umm maybe grab an ice cream with me?"
"Yeah sure." I say smiling as a look of relief comes over his face. We leave behind the others to go to an ice cream parlor down the street.
"What's good here?" I ask as we enter the small shop.
"Cactus juice." Joey says smiling.
"As in the spiky plant thing?"
"No, it's vanilla ice cream with slush syrup on it then they put ginger ale to make it all fizzy."
"Alright sounds good."
"What flavor do you want?" I look over the chart with all the slush flavors.
"Cherry." I say finally.
"What can I get you two?" the guy behind the counter asks.
"Two cherry cactus juices." Joey says as he looks over at me and smiles. The guy behind the counter hands us our ice cream drink things and we take a seat.
"Oh don't you feel manly drinking such a pink drink."
"I don't have to prove my manliness to you, you already saw it all this afternoon." He says cheekily.
"So true, and my compliments." I say as we start laughing lightly as I put a spoonful of ice cream in my mouth.
"Thank you." he says proudly as he blushes none the less.
We head back to the skate park where we see the girls that Jakob was talking to had now left, so he was attempting a bunch of different jumps. Lil and Matthew were now 'chillin' on one of the benches.
"Where'd you guys go?" Jakob asks as he comes to a halt.
"Ice cream." Joey says shrugging.
"And you didn't bring me?"
"Nope."
"Meanie." Jakob pouts as he goes back to trying to jump the rail. My cell phone starts buzzing in my pocket. I take it out and put it to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Anna, where are you?"
"I'm at the skate park with Lil and Joey."
"Who?"
"The neighbors."
"Oh okay, well it's getting kind of late."
"Yeah, yeah." I mumble as I hang up the phone.
"What's up?" Joey asks as I slip the phone back in my pocket.
"I have to go home now." I say shrugging.
"Okay." He says as he waves to Jakob. Lil who overheard what had just been said speaks up.
"Anna, can I sleep over at your place."
"Uhh sure." I say passively, Lil and I slept over at each other's places we barely had to ask.
"What's going on?" Jakob asks as he skates over to us.
"We're leaving." Matthew informs.
"Awe."
"It's not like you have anyone here left to flirt with." Joey says rolling his eyes.
"Hey! I almost got her number."
"Keyword being almost." Lil says laughing.
"Yeah well didn't you say we were going home?" Jakob says quietly.
