Coming Clean, chapter 2

"Billie! I'm back!" Jamie called, coming through the front door.

"Shit," Billie muttered, shoving the paper into the envelope. He grabbed the rest of the envelopes and shoved them into his jacket. "Jamie, I packed up everything. You're all ready to go."

Jamie suddenly became scared, and her eyes darted to the box that had held all her letters she had never sent to Billie. Had he found them? Oh, shit. He knows, he read the letters and he knows.

"Are you okay, Jamie?"

Jamie looked up. "I'm fine. Thanks for packing for me," she said coolly, trying to cover it up. "So, let's eat and then I guess I have to go."

Jamie stood in the terminal, facing Billie and Mike. The hardest part of leaving was always saying goodbye. Come on, Jamie. You've got to leave. There's nothing left for you here.

"Jamie, promise you'll come back," Mike said with a smile. Jamie hesitated. "I promise, Mikey."

Billie stepped up. Was there any way he could make her stay? Anything he could say to change her mind? "I'm gonna miss you so much," he choked. He hadn't planned on crying, but already his throat was closing and tears were swelling in his eyes.

"Oh, Bill. I'm gonna miss you too. So much," Jamie said. The last thing she wanted to do was leave her best friends, especially at this moment. But if she wouldn't be able to handle it if she stayed. Wouldn't be able to handle loving Billie, but not getting the same feeling from him.

Billie pulled her into his arms in a bone-crushing hug. "Jamie, please don't leave," he whispered in her ear. Jamie pulled away with a watery smile.

She began walking towards the boarding area. Don't turn back, don't turn back. If you turn back, you'll never leave, and you have to leave. Right before she was disappeared into the boarding area, she turned back, despite what she had told herself. Billie was watching her with a defeated look on his face, Mike's hand on his shoulder. "I love you," Jamie whispered, wishing that Billie would somehow be able to read her lips and stop her from leaving him. But he just picked up a hand and gave a sad wave before turning and walking away from Gate C-64.

"Dude, I can't believe she actually left," Mike said, driving away from the airport.

"I know," Billie whispered. He couldn't believe it either. She had left. She had left him with no indication of when she was coming back, if she was coming back. Why would she leave in the first place?

Then he remembered the letters. He could feel them pressing against his heart, hidden in his jacket. "Hey, Mike, can you take me home? I would really like to be alone right now," he said quietly, thinking of what the letters held.

"Sure, buddy. She'll be back, you know," Mike said.

"How do you know?"

"I just do," he said with a small smile.
