Death Is Closing In and Catching Up, chapter 1

October 15, 1999
So many things have gone wrong. So many things that I can't control because I'm so young. Even if I was older I couldn't do any thing only because I'm a worthless mortal. No one other than God, if there is one, can save my mommy.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago. I had a feeling she wasn't going to last. I'm only six turning seven, I can't lose her. I already lost my dad, in a way. He left her when she was pregnant with me. Even if he hadn't left, I wouldn't of seen him that much because he was a famous punk rocker. I never knew the name of his band though, so which one he was in beats me. I wish he were here now, I can't go through this all by myself. I guess I'm not alone because my four aunts are helping us out. If I lose my mom I won't have any one to live with, but my grandparents and they get on my nerves. Just last week I had to stay with them because I had a cold and I had to stay away from my mom so she wouldn't catch it. I felt so unwanted and unloved, but my grandma said I was young and naive. I absolutely hated my stay with them.

A young girl of only six dressed in punk attire, walked slowly out of her room and down the hall. Ever since she could remember her mother had always dressed her like this because she looked so much like her father. She couldn't complain though. She wasn't like every other six year old girl whose favorite colors were pink and purple. She was always fond of dark colors like black, red, and blue. She padded down the stairs and into the foyer. Never taking any second glances at the party streamers hanging from the ceiling and walls. It was her seventh birthday and she and he mother had a party to get ready for. She wasn't really in the mood to party though because this might be the last party her mom would attend. She softly padded along the tile floor and into the kitchen to find her mother baking a cake. She walked over to the kitchen table and took a seat, waiting patiently for her breakfast.
"Hey sweety. You ready to turn seven?" her mother asked as she turned around to look at her daughter. The young girl shook her head, letting her long, brown hair fall freely from behind her ears.
"Why not?" the older woman asked, but only getting the shrugging of her daughter's shoulders as an answer.
"Harley Marie Carter, tell me what's wrong." Once her mother used her full name she knew her mom meant business.
"It's just that this might be the last birthday you'll be at," Harley whispered as her eyes fogged over with tears. Her mother quickly walked over to her daughter and wrapped her in a comforting hug before picking her up and carrying her into the livingroom. She sat down on the couch and set the young girl on her lap.
"Sweety, I won't leave this earth just yet. Even if I do, I'll never stop being with you. I'll always be in here," her mother said before touching a finger to her daughter's chest where he heart was. The young girl smiled lightly and placed a hand to her mother's pale cheek. "I love you," she whispered. Her mother smiled a toothy smile and took her daughter's hand in hers. She kissed and a few times before nodding her head and whispering, "I love you, too."
