*1982, 4 May, California*

The ten year old Michael moved back with his mother and twin sister. They never heard from their father again. Michael had met Billie Joe Armstrong at the school canteen. They instantly became best friends, Michele liking Billie Joe too. Billie Joe's dad died in September.

*1987, 4 May, California*

The twins' mother had re-married to a violent man who disliked her two children, and they both hated him back. Michele and Michael (now called Mike and Mish) celebrated their 15th birthday with their best friend Billie Joe. They spent the day smoking some joints (Billie Joe's idea since he sells them for $2) having pizza for dinner, having a few drinks (Mish's idea) and then trashing the public toilets (Mike's idea). Billie Joe went home drunk and high, and no one seemed to care, but Mike and Mish went home slightly drunk and a bit high, to their stepfather (their mother working late).

Their new step-dad yelled at them, giving them a lecture about being to young to get drunk and high. Their stepfather called them swear words and wouldn't stop yelling. He ended up slapping Mish hard across the face and pushing her into the table. She ran out of her house, crying in pain. Mike was then kicked in the guts and scratched on his arm as his step-dad tried to stop him from running away. Mike tore out of the house, running as fast as he could after his twin sister. They both knew where the other one was going.

Mish reached Billie Joe's house first, pounding on the door until someone opened it. Billie Joe's mother let her in and she bolted upstairs and into Billie Joe's bedroom. As soon as Ollie had shut the door, Mike began to pound (exactly the same as Michele had just done) on the door until it opened again. Mike then sprinted up to Billie Joe's room too. In the middle of the room, Mish and Billie Joe were hugging, Mish crying her eyes out. She was a physically strong girl, just not as strong as her step-dad.

Mike joined them, hugging the back of Mish, trying to comfort her. After a few minutes of silence, Mike pulled away from the group hug. Billie Joe slowly let go of Michele who had stopped crying. Her back hurt so much from the table and her face throbbed in pain. Mike's arm was bleeding from his scratch and Billie Joe pulled out a bandage for him.

"Again?" Billie Joe asked and Mike nodded. Michele sat down on Billie Joe's bed, massaging her back. "At least it wasn't as bad as last time." A shiver ran up Billie Joe's spine at the thought.

"Yeah. On our b'day too," Mike mumbled. Billie Joe picked up Blue, his guitar, and started to play a tune.

"I'll play for ya's. I actually wrote some lyrics to go with it," Billie Joe said and started to sing as Mike sat down next to his sister. "I saw you standing alone, with a sad look on your face." Mike and Mish tuned out, even though they appreciated how Billie Joe was singing just for them. After he finished they clapped for a few seconds and Billie Joe bowed, making them smile. He said thank you a few times dramatically and put Blue aside.

"You're a great friend, Billie Joe," Michele and Michael both said as they looked him straight in the eyes.

"Gee, thanks, I guess," Billie Joe murmured, started to get embarrassed a bit.
Later that night when they knew that for sure their mother would be back, Mish and Mike returned home, wishing the violence towards them would end.
