Cocky Brat, chapter 10

"Ness!" Annie calls across the economy sized kitchen, "Your phone!" she realizes she isn't being heard. She picks up the vibrating cell phone and checks the number. Joe-leen she presses the green button to answer the call.

"Hello."
"Ness! Thank you for answering."
"Wha? You don't sound like a woman."
"This isn't Vanessa." Joey says slowly.
"No, this is her cousin, Annie." She states clearly, "Who the hell are you?"
"Joey, well Joseph Armstrong."
"Oh, she's pissed at you."
"Please, I need to talk to her."
"Listen you're dealing with a line of temperamental woman, and I think its her time of month on top of it so she'll call you when she's ready."
"I need to apologize."
"I said she's pissed, and if she wanted to talk to she would."
"Please!" he pleads as his wit's end. Only silence, "Just tell her I'm sorry."
"I will, Joey is it?"
"Yeah."
"Okay bye."

Annie turns off the phone and goes to other end of the restaurant where Vanessa just finished taking an order.
"Ness."
"Yeah."
"Umm." She says nervously, "I uhh sort of answered your phone."
"Mmmhmm." Vanessa says absent mindedly as she goes to give the chefs the order.
"And, it was Joey." Vanessa stops dead in her tracks, "He kept insisting to talk to you and I know you're pissed at him so I said no and then he told me to tell you that he's really, really sorry." Annie manages to say as quickly as possible in one breath, "Please don't be mad."
"I'm not mad." Vanessa says slowly, "I uh, I uh got to get back to work."

Vanessa was torn between taking him back but her pride was in the way. She couldn't just go back to him after he made her lose her job. Not just any job, a job that would sit awfully nice on a résumé.

"Do you love him?" Annie asks when the two of them are on break, outside in the back of the restaurant, sitting against the wall.
"Hmm?"
"The Joey guy, do you love him? Or did you?"
"He's just a cocky son of a bitch with too much charm for his own damn good!" she says bitterly. Annie stares at her shocked, "Then he has this sweet and perfect side, the side that made him quit smoking for me, the side that waited patiently on the side lines."

Annie's eyes bulge in confusion. "Wow."
"Shut it."
"I've never seen you so contradicting." She murmurs.
"It's just this guy!" she exclaims as she stands up, "He-he-he's impossible!" Annie puts a mouth over her hand to stop from laughing, "One minute he's as sweet as could be the next he's fucking cocky!"
"And cocky's bad?"
"Then he comes up to me and kisses me and then I just, just, just-"
"You love him." Annie says slowly, "Hearing you ramble you're in love with him."
"Shut it!"
