BILLIE JOE'S POV
Why does she do that? Kay's got a gorgeous voice, but she almost always sings something sad.
"Wow," David said after Kay'd finished singing. "I never knew she had a voice like that. It doesn't run in the family."
"Really? Her voice is awesome, but I thought it was hereditary," I said, a bit surprised.
"Nope. Not unless Dorothy or Paul could carry a note. She's too much like her mom for her own good.'
"She does look an awful lot like her. She's showed me pictures, and the resemblance is scary."
"It's even scarier with her grandmother at that age."
"Billie, who's this?" Adrienne asked.
"I'm David Ortega," David said, putting his hand out. "I know who you guys are."
"Why do you have a different last name than Crystal?" I asked.
"We have different dads. All three of us," David said.
"Bill, come take a look at this," Mike hollered. He and Estelle were watching TV.
"What, Mike?" I said, walking over.
"Yet another murder in South Florida tonight," the announcer said. "This time it was a young couple living in Plantation, with a daughter who is currently out of town." I quickly looked over to Laury, and she was crying her eyes out. "Yolanda and Thomas Nordsor were the victims. Their daughter, Lauriann Nordsor, was lucky to escape this, but will the murderer come after her next?"
"Laury..." I said. "I'm sorry."
"May I go in to Kay? Please?" she asked me, her eyes begging me to say yes.
"Go right ahead," I said, helping her stand up and walked over with her to Kay's room. She ran in and jumped onto Kay, sobbing. Kay jolted up-she'd been sleeping- and looked from Laury to me, and back to Laury with a confused look on her face.
"What on earth, Laur?" Kay said. Laury just shook her head and continued sobbing. "Oh no. Oh god, no. Not your family, too. Oh god, Laury." Kay hugged her back, and managed to get her to calm down, but she didn't cry.
"I'm so sorry, Kay," Laury stammered. "To come in like this... I'm so sorry. Especially after Jimmie."
"No. I'm not forgiving this bastard," Kay glared.
KAY'S POV
"He's hurt us too much. I'll track him down myself if that's what it'll take," I stated.
"You'll do no such thing," Billie Joe said, shaking his head. "No. I won't let you."
"Don't you dare say that, Billie Joe. You'd do the same thing if it were you! You wouldn't wait for orders! You'd just go out and do it! I'm the same way! Ask Laury!"
"It's true," Laury said, sitting up on Kay's bed. "Her personality is a lot like yours."
"No, she's not. Trust me on that," Billie Joe said. "Kay's too... how do I put it... gentle for that. Kay, you're the type who'll take care of someone, not beat them to a bloody pulp."
My eyes were flashing red, and when they did, I was dangerous.
LAURY'S POV
Uh, oh. Kay's eyes are flashing red again.
"Kay, calm down," I said, pinning her arms on her sides. "Don't do it, don't do what you're thinking. Please, DON'T lose it again."
"Why shouldn't I?" Kay gritted through her teeth. "I'm pretty pissed off right now." She cocked her head.
"Kay, your eyes are fully red," I said, gripping harder. "You know what happened last time you lost it. You could've been sent to jail."
"I'd rather go to jail than lose anyone again," Kay cried. Her eyes had softened, but still showed fire. She began to shake. "You guys are the only family I have left, and now... I might lose it all again! I don't want that to happen!"
"Kay, it's not," I heard Billie Joe say, and he came over and relieved me of my job of restraint.
"LET. ME. GO!" Kay screamed. "I'm going to find that bastard and kill him!"
"KAY! If you do that, you're just stooping down to his level!" Billie argued. Everyone had come in by now because of the screaming and hollering. "Do you really want that? You'd be no better than him!"
"I don't care!" Kay cried, going limp. "I don't want to lose my family again!"
"Kay, sweetie, we'll find whoever's doing this and stop them," Adrienne said, coming over to the other side of Kay's bed, and lifted up her wrist. "I don't want you to hurt anyone or yourself anymore. We'll work this out, no matter what it takes."
"I don't care if I die; I just want to save you guys!" Kay whimpered. She collapsed back onto her bed, and the monitor that was hooked up to her started beeping like crazy and flashing red. "What?"
"Kay? Kay, please, hold on!" Billie Joe said, grabbing her uninjured hand and squeezing it. "Don't go!"
"No... if I do, you guys will finally be safe... ," Kay whispered, before slipping out. Doctors and nurses flew into the room and tried to revive her, but weren't having any luck. One of the doctors told the nurse something and she went and unplugged the machines.
"I'm sorry," one of the doctors, Dr. Harrison, said. "She's... gone."
BILLIE JOE'S POV
"What?" I whispered. "Gone?"
"Yes. But we found this piece of paper in her pocket," Dr. Harrison said, handing me a crumbled up paper. I opened it, and read it out loud.
'To whoever reads this,
I know I'm going to die. I can't hold on anymore. But I have a few things I need to say first: Jake, I'm giving you Oceania. You better take care of her, you hear? Joey, you're getting Emerald, and if you don't take care of her, I'll come back from the dead and kick your sorry ass. Estelle and Ramona: pick whatever you want from my closet; you KNOW what's in there. Frankito: the video games are yours. I've got to admit, you're better at them than me. Adie, please take care of the rings. I had intended to wear them at my wedding, but... seems that day'll never come. Nick, take care of everyone for me, okay? Let them all know what happened. Mike and Tre: take whatever you want, if there's anything you want, but Tre, don't take my bras and sell them on eBay. And Billie Joe, can you see if you can get my last name changed? I think you know what I want it changed to. Well, time to see my parents again. Goodbye, everyone.
-Catherine Marie Armstrong'
"Unbelievable... ," I muttered. "Fucking unbelievable... "
"Let's... get this over with," Adie muttered sadly.
"This isn't right!" I yelled, shaking. "It isn't right for a parent to bury their own daughter!"
Over the next month, everything was settled, and Kay's funeral was held on August 29, 2006, which happened to be the same day as her parent's 16th anniversary of their marriage.
2 YEARS LATER
BILLIE JOE'S POV
We're still getting over Kay's death. The boys have started school again, but they're just as depressed as me and Adie are. I don't even go out of the house. I was thinking about everything that had happened since we adopted Kay when there was a knock at the door. I got up to answer it.
"What do you want?" I glared. "HOLY CRAP! WHAT THE HELL!? YOU'RE DEAD!" I hollered, falling down right on my ass.
The person laughed, and came in. "Damn, dad, you need to get out of this place," she laughed.
"Billie? What's-OH MY GOD," Adrienne said, running down the stairs. "KAY!? BUT YOU'RE DEAD!"
"Yeah, I know I am," 'Kay' laughed. "And I'm back," she grinned. I sat there stunned.
"But WHY?" I said, still shocked.
"Long story short, I became an angel-a guardian angel, to be exact-and my mission is to protect you guys, and I'm allowed to stay on earth until all of you decide you want to croak."
"Dad? Did Tre break down the door again?" Joey asked, coming in the door, with Jakob right behind him.
"No... Someone-or thing-else did," Billie Joe muttered, his eyes still not leaving me.
"Goddamn, I'm gone 2 years and now I'm a 'thing'? You're mean, Dad," I said, putting my hands on my hips.
"Kay!?" Joey yelled, wide-eyed.
"Kay! You came!" Jake said, dropping his back pack, running over to me, and hugging me. "You really came!"
"Jake? What are you talking about?" Adie asked him, helping Billie off the ground.
"I talked to Kay a lot, when she was up in heaven," Jake said, looking up at his parents.
"It's true," I said, nodding. "I would come down a lot and talk to Jake. He was pretty lonely without me here."
"We all are," Joey said. "But if you're an angel, where're your wings?"
"My wings? I'll show you, but I need to step outside. They're HUGE," I laughed. I stepped outside, shut my eyes, and concentrated on my back. I felt them burst out of my back, and my outfit changed to what it would be when angels are up in heaven.
"I thought angels were supposed to have these flowing, white gowns or something," Billie Joe said.
"You wear your dream outfit," I laughed. Mine was far from normal. A long-sleeved, collared black shirt, red tie, black flare pants, and black and red Converse. Basically, it was similar what Billie Joe wore for the concerts. My wings were freaking HUGE- 10 feet in diameter, stretched, with flight feathers 15 feet long, with white on the upper part and pitch black for the lower.
"Amazing... ," Jake said, running his hand over my right wing. "They're really soft, too."
"I know. And they really keep you warm in the mountains," I laughed.
"Mountains?" Billie Joe laughed. "What were you doing in the mountains?"
"Training, of course," I said, serious. "How else do you think I got to my position? I finished my course the fastest on record." I shrank my wings down really small, 1 foot in diameter and 4 ½ feet in length, including the flight feathers, and changed back to my regular clothes. Then, a car pulled into the driveway. I recognized it as Tre's BMW.
"Hi!" I yelled.
"What the hell? Kay?" Mike said, getting out of the passenger door. Tre stood staring at me.
"You're older than Kay," Tre said, looking up and down me.
"Tre, get your perverted eyes offa me, unless you want another nosebleed," I hissed. "At least you noticed. I AM older. I'm 20 now."
"20!?" Billie Joe and Adie yelled. "You were 14 when you died! How... ?"
"Heaven's time goes faster than Earth's," I explained. "While only 2 years have passed here, 6 have passed in Heaven. I'll be 21 soon. Remember? My birthday's on Valentines Day, remember?"
"No, I don't," Billie Joe said. "I don't think you ever told us."
"I knew," Jake said, standing by my side. "She told me."
"Do you tell him everything or what?" Mike laughed.
"Actually, yes, I do," I grinned.
THE NEXT DAY
I got out of bed and went over to the mirror, pictured what I wanted to wear, and it appeared. That's a good advantage of being an angel-you could create clothes out of thin air. I went downstairs for breakfast and saw Jake and Adie making waffles.
"Hi guys," I yawned, stretching my little wings.
"Hey, Kay," Jake said, turning his head to face me. "Hey, wait a minute... you look like you're 16."
"Huh?" I said, then looked down at my body. "Oh, yeah. I am."
"What on earth?" Adie muttered. "How... ?"
"I changed back to what age I'd be on earth," I yawned again. "Why do you seem so surprised? I'll be 17 soon."
"Today's February 1," Adie said, looking at the calendar. "You're right. What do you want to do for your birthday?"
"I don't really care. I haven't celebrated it in 2 years," I said, sitting down. Then an envelope appeared beside me. "Joy."
"You have mail!" said a robotic voice.
"Open inbox," I sighed, and screen popped up. I read the letter. "I'll be back in a minute or two. I need to take care of something." I disappeared, but was back in 2 minutes.
"What was that about?" Jake asked.
"Ugh... Jimmie was acting up, and of course, I'm still the only one she listens to," I laughed. "Sheesh... she still depends on me, even when we're dead. Well, I'm not fully dead."
"Hey, I gotta go to school," Jake said. "What about Joey?"
"I'll take care of him," I said, and snapped my fingers, and Joey was sitting in the chair next to me, fully dressed, and sound asleep. "Just wake him up."
"Joe! School, remember?" Jake said, shaking his brother.
"Wha? Let me sleep, dude," Joey mumbled. "I'm tired."
"Oh really?" I said. I stuck my finger in his ear, and he jolted awake. "Ha ha, I know your weak spot," I sang.
"Oh, can it," Joey said, lightly punching my arm.
"But there's nothing to can," I said, my eyes wide. God, I love being sarcastic.
"Well-shu-stop messing with my head!" Joey snarled.
"Grouchy much?" Billie Joe said, coming down.
"Morning," Adie said, kissing him on the cheek. "Food's already on the table."
"Morning," Billie Joe yawned, sitting down. "Thanks. Who's driving today?"
"I will," I said. I had a license, and had been wanting to drive a car very badly.
"Sure, just don't get arrested," Billie Joe said, biting into his waffle.
"Whatever," I said, standing up. "Come on, short stuff." I stopped at the door. "Dad!"
"What?" Billie hollered from the kitchen.
"Keys!" He threw them over, and I caught them like a pro. "Thanks! We're off!" We piled into the BMW and started our drive. People were staring when we got to Joey's middle school. "See ya!" I said to him, punching his shoulder.
"You do realize you're a lot stronger than I am," he whined, grabbing his shoulder, "so stop doing that. It hurts."
"You're strong. Get over it," I grinned.
"Whatever. You picking us up?"
"Who else would? Dad's too lazy, Mom's gotta work, Mike's probably with Estelle, and Tre... I don't really want to think about it."
"That's a yes. See you after school, then. Bye." He shut the door and ran into the school.
"Your turn now, Jake," I laughed, putting the car in gear.
"What about you?" Jake asked.
"High school? I'm going by Nick's to finish. I'll be going to his school. West Valley High. Sounds preppy, but if Nick can survive there, I can."
"Yeah. Well, I better head to class," Jake said as I pulled up in front of his school.
"Alright, squirt, but don't do anything I wouldn't!" I laughed.
"I know, trust me, I know." He shut the door and waved, then walked over to his friends. I drove the 15 minutes to West Valley and walked into the principal's office. I was given a paper to fill out, and my books, then my schedule. I went to my first class, which happened to be History.
"Excuse me," I said, walking into the room. "I'm Kay Armstrong. I just transferred here."
"Ah, yes, Ms. Wills just informed me you were coming," the teacher, Mr. Talers, said. "Take a seat next to... " He looked around the room. I saw a familiar face.
"Sir, may I sit next to Nicholas?" I asked. Nick's jaw dropped when he saw me.
"Kay?" Nick said. "What are you doing here?"
"If you listened, I transferred here, dumbass," I said sarcastically.
"Miss Armstrong, please watch your language around here," Mr. Talers said.
"Call me Kay," I smiled, and sat down by Nick.
Why does she do that? Kay's got a gorgeous voice, but she almost always sings something sad.
"Wow," David said after Kay'd finished singing. "I never knew she had a voice like that. It doesn't run in the family."
